Ritika Mohan Singh is an Indian actress and former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter who has appeared in Tamil films as well as Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam films. After representing India in boxing at the 2009 Asian Indoor Games and in the Super Fighting League, she played the lead role in Sudha Kongara Prasad’s Tamil film Irudhi Suttru, which was also shot in Hindi as Saala Khadoos. She co-starred in the film with R. Madhavan. For her performance in the film, she received a Special Mention Award at the 63rd annual National Film Awards. Ritika Singh has been a kickboxer and mixed martial artist since she was a child, following her father’s guidance. She participated in the first season of the Super Fighting League as a mixed martial artist and made her debut in the competition.

Acting career

Ritika Singh started her acting career in 2013. She was spotted by director Sudha Kongara Prasad in an advertisement for Super Fight League and later auditioned for the lead role in the bilingual film Saala Khadoos (2016) after the producers got in touch through the competition chairman Raj Kundra. The filmmakers wanted a professional boxer to play the role of Madhi, a Marwari girl who grew up in the slums of Chennai. They did not want an actress to play the role of a boxer. That is why they signed Singh. Singh learned the role in the Tamil version of Irudhi Suttru phonetically by writing down the dialogues in Hindi and then translating them into Tamil. The film went on floors in late January 2016 and was produced by the film’s two lead actors, R. Madhavan and Rajkumar Hirani.

Ritika is the first actress to win a National Film Award for a non-dubbing role, and she received a Special Mention Award for her performance in Irudhi Suttru, becoming the first person to win the award at the 63rd National Film Awards. PlayIrudhi Suttru is a 2016 sports drama film from India. The film was written and directed by Sudha Kongara. The film was shot in both Tamil and Hindi. The Hindi version is titled Saala Khadoos and stars R. Madhavan as a boxing coach who is ignored by the boxing association. He tries to fulfill his dream by training an amateur boxer named Madhi, played by Ritika Singh in her debut film. Both the Tamil and Hindi versions were produced by S. Sashikanth for YNOT Studios and UTV Motion Pictures. The Tamil version was distributed by CV Kumar’s Thirukumaran Entertainment and Dream Factory, while Madhavan’s Tricolour Films and Rajkumar Hirani Films collaborated to distribute the Hindi version.

Kongara wrote the script for the film in early 2011. He then roped in Madhavan to play the lead role. This was Madhavan’s first Tamil film in four years. The pre-production work for the film began in 2013 and Sashikanth officially announced it in May 2014. The film’s shoot began in July 2014 and ended in December of the same year. The film was shot in 50 days. The music was composed by Santhosh Narayanan and the background music was composed by Sanjay Wandrekar and Atul Raninga (Hindi version). Sivakumar Vijayan shot the film and Sathish Suriya edited it.
