Jim Sarbh, born on 27 August 1987, is an Indian stage and film actor. He is best known for his supporting roles in Hindi films for which he has won a Screen Award an International Indian Film Academy Award and been nominated for two Filmfare Awards. Sarbh has also directed and acted in a number of theatre productions in India. Sarbh has frequently appeared in theatre productions particularly those based in Mumbai in addition to his film career.

Sarbh made his feature film debut as the villain in the critically acclaimed and commercially successful biopic Neerja (2016), which earned him excellent reviews from critics as well as nominations for a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Screen Award. He came to notoriety for his antagonistic performances in the historical drama Padmaavat (2018) and the biopic Sanju (2018), both of which were among the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. He also appeared in films such as A Death in the Gunj (2017), Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), and Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway (2023). In 2022, he portrayed Dr. Homi Bhabha in the television series Rocket Boys. Sarbh has frequently appeared in stage works, particularly those centred in Mumbai, in addition to his cinema career. Bollywood debut and Theatre roles – 2009 till 2016

Sarbh worked as a literary intern for the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta for a year after graduating from Emory University. He appeared in Atlanta productions of The Show!, The Breakup, Tennis in Nablus, and Ice Glen in 2009; the latter part earned him a Major Supporting part Metropolitan Atlanta Theatre Award. Sarbh returned to Mumbai in 2012 and began performing in local theatre shows. Several critics praised his performance as Happy Loman in Alyque Padamsee’s 2013 staging of Death of a Salesman.

Jim continued to act in Mumbai-based plays such as Rajat Kapoor’s What’s Done is Done, Rage Productions’ The Glass Menagerie, Vickram Kapadia’s The Merchant of Venice, and Kalki Koechlin’s Living Room, and later made his directorial and writing debuts with the 2014 productions Bull and Eat, respectively. He was named to Forbes India’s 30 under 30 list in 2015 for his contributions to the Mumbai theatre scene. Jim made his feature film debut in Ram Madhvani’s 2016 biographical drama Neerja. In 2016, he released two other films: Yashodhara by Jyoti Patil and 3 12 Takes by Daria Gai. He has collaborated on the short films Mama’s Boys by Akshat Verma and Like Summer Like Rain by Gouri Dutt.\

Neerja is a 2016 biographical thriller film directed by Ram Madhvani and written by Saiwyn Quadras and Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh in Hindi. It was co-produced by Atul Kasbekar’s Bling Unplugged and Fox Star Studios. The film stars Sonam Kapoor as the eponymous lead with Shekhar Ravjiani Shabana Azmi Yogendra Tiku Kavi Shastri and Jim Sarbh in supporting roles.

The plot is based on a true story: the attempted hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi Pakistan on September 5 1986 by the Libyan-backed Abu Nidal Organization. Bhanot died while attempting to save the passengers and crew 359 of the 379 on board surviving.

Raabta

Raabta is a 2017 Indian Hindi-language romantic action thriller film with a humorous twist directed by Dinesh Vijan in his directorial debut and co-produced by Vijan Homi Adajania and Bhushan Kumar. Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon star with Jim Sarbh Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma providing support. The plot revolves around reincarnated star-crossed lovers.

The film was met with criticism from producer Allu Aravind of Geetha Arts who claimed that the plot and characters were too similar to those of the studio’s 2009 film Magadheera. The film was released on June 9 2017. Alia Bhatt was considered for the lead role opposite Sushant Singh Rajput but she declined due to scheduling conflicts.

In December 2015 Asin was approached to play the lead role opposite Rajput but she declined due to her decision not to act after her marriage. In February 2016 Kriti Sanon was cast in the lead female role in the film.

Padmaavat

Padmaavat is a 2018 Indian period romantic action drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Based on Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem of the same name it stars Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati a Rajput queen known for her beauty and the wife of Maharawal Ratan Singh played by Shahid Kapoor. When Sultan Alauddin Khilji played by Ranveer Singh learns of her beauty he invades her kingdom in order to enslave her. In supporting roles Aditi Rao Hydari Jim Sarbh, Raza Murad and Anupriya Goenka appeared.

Padmaavat received the most nominations at the 64th Filmfare Awards including Best Film Best Director (both for Bhansali) Best Actress (Padukone) and Best Actor (Singh) and won four awards including Best Actor (Critics) (Singh). It also received three National Film Awards including one for Best Music Direction for Bhansali.

Sanju

Sanju is a 2018 biographical film directed and edited by Rajkumar Hirani written by Hirani and Abhijat Joshi and produced by Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Vinod Chopra’s production companies are Rajkumar Hirani Films and Vinod Chopra Films.

The film follows the life of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt focusing on his drug addiction arrest for his involvement in the 1993 Bombay bombings relationship with his father comeback in the industry eventual drop of Bombay bombing charges and release after serving his sentence. Ranbir Kapoor plays the title character and the ensemble cast also includes Vicky Kaushal, Paresh Rawal, Anushka Sharma, Dia Mirza, Manisha Koirala, Karishma Tanna, Jim Sarbh and Sonam Kapoor.
