After the success of 1984, Malik started to gain fame and was offered more soundtrack assignments in the mid-1980s. However, he was unable to establish himself in Bollywood at that time due to the influence of Bappi Lahiri, RD Burman Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. In 1985, Manmohan Desai’s film Mard brought Malik his first major commercial success and first attracted the attention of Bollywood. Malik introduced dubbing singer Mohammad Aziz for the first time in Mard, and the two often collaborated on different soundtracks of Malik.

1993 was the most glorious year in Malik’s career and also a turning point. In the same year, his first film “Phool Aur Angaar” was released and became a huge success. Mahesh Bhatt’s telefilm “Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee” included hit songs such as “Badalon Mein Chup Raha Hai Dil Mein Sanam Ki Soorat” and “Tere Dar Par Sanam Chale Aaye”, which gave Malik his first taste of popularity.

He directed the film after the success of the film Bhatt’s Sir, which featured hits like Sun Sun Barsaat Ki Dhun and Yeh Ujli Chandni. His last album of the year was a huge success with tracks like Baazigar O Baazigar Kitabein Bahut Si Chhupana Bhi Nahi Aata Aye Mere Humsafar and most notably Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein (Malik sang a few verses for Baazigar).

The film was the best-selling Bollywood soundtrack of the year, selling 10 million copies. It catapulted Malik to fame and cemented his place as one of Bollywood’s top song makers. At the 39th Filmfare Awards in 1994, Malik received his first major film award, the Baazigar Award for Best Music Director.

dispute

Several songs sung by Malik in the film Gentleman, composed by AR Rahman and Yaarana’s Mera Piya Ghar Aaya, are allegedly identical to the song of the same name composed by Pakistani qawwali musician Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Malik has been criticised for using music composed by other composers. Khan does not seem to be against Bollywood music producers adopting his lyrics but was very upset when Malik adapted a song with religious overtones into a secular love song. In an interview with Hindustan News Service, Malik refuted all allegations of plagiarism, insisting that no one in the world is original and all similarities are only because music has only seven notes. According to Khan, Malik had repeatedly told him that he loved his music and actually expressed his admiration for him by using his tunes.

In October 2018, Malik was accused of sexual harassment by multiple women amid the #MeToo movement in India. Singer Shweta Pandit made an allegation, claiming that he made unwanted sexual advances towards her when she was 15. Lyricist Sameer defended Pandit, claiming that he was at the audition scene where Pandit allegedly abused him. Neha Bhasin and Sona Mohapatra both accused Malik of sexual assault. Malik refuted the allegations, but despite his denials, the negative publicity led to his removal as a judge on Indian Idol Season 10. The allegations were backed by Alisha Chinai, who filed a sexual harassment case against Malik in the 1990s.
