Vijay Sethupathi is an Indian actor producer screenwriter lyricist and playback singer who works mainly in Tamil cinema. Vijay Sethupathi’s real name is Vijaya Gurunatha Sethupathi Kalimuthu.

Vijay Sethupathi began his film career after working as a background actor for a while and taking on small supporting roles until landing his first lead role in Seenu Ramasamy’s Thenmerku Paruvakaatru (2010). Struggles

Vijay Sethupathi was a workaholic. Vijay Sethupathi claims he earned his way through college by taking on a few part-time jobs. While I was a student I worked as an accountant in a fast food restaurant a textile showroom a phone booth and an auditor’s office. My father thought it was strange but he never influenced any of my choices. Sethupathi’s first actual job after graduating from college paid him Rs 3 500 per month as a cement salesman. From 9 am to 7:30 pm I used to work there. Then between eight o’clock and midnight I would man a phone booth. That would give me about 1 200 rupees. I had to provide for my family because my father’s job was not earning enough he explains.

In November 2000 Vijay Sethupathi moved to Dubai in pursuit of a better life and job. It paid about Rs 12 000 and was also an accounting position he claims. Just a few months after his marriage he caught the acting bug while working in the sales division of a friend’s interior design company. I used to be a great model. I was photographed a lot by my brother while I was in Dubai. I envisioned myself as a potential movie star. But there was a problem: I knew nothing about movies. I don’t believe in luck therefore I realized I needed some professional training if I wanted to have any chance of succeeding. 

I then learned that Koothu-P-Pattarai [a well-known Tamil theater company in Chennai] provided workshops for budding actors. He was disappointed to discover that they had stopped offering their acting training but an accountant position was open.It paid terribly poorly yet I chose to accept the position without even informing my family. I figured I could watch the performers who would show there and learn Sethupathi explains. I accepted the chance because my kids were still young. When my wife learned she was quite upset and forced me to make a commitment that I would stop. But I persisted and she gave up trying to talk me out of it he adds.

Vijay Sethupathi then performed a street drama on the tsunami in over 50 villages while still in Pattarai. He claims that he shed all my inhibitions and it gave me confidence. I’ve always believed that acting is a natural talent. The idea that actors should realize the craft of acting via their training was one of the first things I overheard them express at Koothu-P-Pattarai.

Vijay Sethupathi started out as a background actor often appearing in movies as the companion of the main character. He also appeared in a number of short films for the Kalaignar TV television program Nalaya Iyakunar as well as various television series including the well-known one Penn which premiered in March 2006. 

He collaborated with Karthik Subbaraj on a number of short films and after Karthik Subbaraj hired him for his first feature film one of his short films won the Best Actor prize at the Norway Tamil Film Festival short film competition.

First Movie- Thenmerku Paruvakaatru (2010)

Murugaiyan a shepherd of goats encounters Pechi a female criminal who lives off of stealing goats. Despite his mother Veerayi’s opposition to their connection he falls in love with her.

Thenmerku Paruvakatru is the title of Seenu Ramasamy’s 2010 Tamil-language drama film which was also produced by Shibu Issac. In her 100th film Saranya Ponvannan was awarded Best Actress at the National Film Awards. It stars Vijay Sethupathi and Vasundhra Chiyertra. N. R. Raghunanthan created the soundtrack Chezhiyan shot the movie and Mu. Kasivishwanathan did the editing.

The movie’s music was written by N. R. Raghunanthan a debutante. For the song Kalli Kaattil Vairamuthu got the National Film Award for Best Lyrics. Vairamuthu is responsible for all of the lyrics.

Pizza (2012 film)

Anu a would-be author of horror literature cohabitates with Michael a pizza delivery boy. He visits a bungalow one day while making a delivery of food and strange things start to happen there.

2012’s Pizza is a Tamil-language horror film written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj a newcomer. Remya Nambeesan Aadukalam Naren Jayakumar Pooja Ramachandran and Bobby Simha play supporting roles alongside Vijay Sethupathi in the movie. Pizza was released on October 19 2012 and it quickly became a huge critical and financial success. Later Pizza was recreated as Whistle (2013) and Pizza in Hindi (2014). The Bengali movie Golpo Holeo Shotti was a remake of Pizza.

Vijay Sethupathi became one of the most sought-after performers in Tamil cinema because of the success of Pizza.

Vikram Vedha (2017)

Play

A realistic police officer named Vikram and his partner Simon are looking to apprehend Vedha. Vedha offers to tell Vikram a story when he voluntarily surrenders upsetting Vikram’s life.

Neo-noir action thriller Vikram Vedha is a 2017 Tamil-language movie that was written and directed by Pushkar-Gayathri and produced by S. Sashikanth under his production company YNOT Studios. Prem Achyuth Kumar Hareesh Peradi and Vivek Prasanna play supporting parts in the movie which also stars R. Madhavan Vijay Sethupathi Shraddha Srinath Kathir and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. 

The movie which was based on the Indian folktale Baital Pachisi follows the tale of Vikram a police inspector who sets out to find and murder the gangster Vedha. Vedha tells Vikram three stories after he gives himself up voluntarily which alters how Vikram views good and evil.

The movie won four Filmfare One Vijay and One Norway Tamil Film Festival honors.. Moreover it won an Edison Award three Ananda Vikatan Cinema Awards and two Techofes Awards.

Within 24 hours after its debut the teaser trailer had received 10 million views. On June 22 2017 actors Shah Rukh Khan and Sivakarthikeyan uploaded the official trailer to YouTube.

Vikram Vedha was nominated for seven awards at the 65th Filmfare Awards South winning four of them including Best Film (Sashikanth) and Best Supporting Actress (Varalaxmi). Madhavan and Sethupathi were nominated for Best Actor with Sethupathi taking home the prize; Madhavan took home the Critics Award. 

In addition Pushkar-Gayathri won for Best Director and Best Male Playback Singer (Anirudh for Yaanji). At the 10th Vijay Awards the movie took home four of its fifteen nominations including Best Director (Pushkar-Gayathri) Best Screenplay Writer (Gayathri) Best Actor (Sethupathi) and Best Background Score (Sam). 

Additionally the movie was honored with four awards from the Norway Tamil Film Festival three Ananda Vikatan Cinema Awards two Techofes Awards and an Edison Award.

Super Deluxe (2019)

As a linked movie it centers on four groups of people who all find themselves in unforeseen situations and are about to meet their fate on the same fateful day.

Thiagarajan Kumararaja co-wrote co-produced and directed the 2019 Tamil-language film Super Deluxe. Nalan Kumarasamy Neelan K. Sekar and Mysskin also contributed to the screenplay.

Vijay Sethupathi Fahadh Faasil Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Ramya Krishnan star in the Tyler Durden And Kino Fist Alchemy Vision Works and East-West Dream Work Entertainment production.

With the use of color as a key narrative tool the movie explored themes of nostalgia science fiction political happenings and emotions.

The movie received positive reviews from critics who praised Vijay Sethupathi’s acting as well as the direction storyline and screenplay by Kumararaja. At the Ananda Vikatan Cinema Awards Super Deluxe took up four accolades: Best Screenplay Best Supporting Actress (Ramya Krishnan) Best Cinematography (P. S. Vinod and Nirav Shah) and Best Music Director (Yuvan Shankar Raja). 

At the Zee Cine Awards Tamil’s first ceremony the movie was nominated for four categories: Best Supporting Actor – Female (Krishnan) Best Child Artist (Ashwanth Ashokkumar) Best Editor (Sathyaraj Natarajan) and Best Art Director (Vijay Adhinathan) and it won them all including a Jury Special award for Best Actor – Female (Samantha Ruth Prabhu). The movie took home five Critics Choice Film Awards including two Edison Awards Best Movie of the Year Best Film Best Director Best Actor and Best Writing.

The film was nominated in four categories at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne which was held on 8 August 2019 and took home two awards: Best Actor (Vijay Sethupathi) and Equality in Cinema (Honorary Award). It was nominated for Best Asian Film at the 9th AACTA Awards. Vijay Sethupathi was honored for his performance in the movie as Best Supporting Actor at the 67th National Film Awards which were given out for Indian movies produced in 2019.

Super Deluxe was a close choice for Oscar Award nomination from India but eventually Gully Boy was the official entry to Oscar from India in 2020.

Vikram (2022 film)

A special agent looks into a murder that was perpetrated by a group of masked serial killers. But a confusing web of hints quickly directs him to Chennai’s drug lord.

The movie is a sequel to the same-named movie from 1986. Lokesh Kanagaraj is the writer and director of the action thriller Vikram which will be released in 2022 in the Indian Tamil language through Raaj Kamal Films International. 

Kamal Haasan Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil are the actors in the movie. Suriya makes a brief cameo as Rolex and supporting roles are played by Kalidas Jayaram Narain and Chemban Vinod Jose.

On 3 June 2022 Vikram was released in theaters to generally favorable reviews from critics who praised the film’s plot action sequences production values and cast performances (particularly Kamal Haasan Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi). 

The movie earned 432.50 crores ($54 million) becoming the fourth-highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time and the highest-grossing Tamil movie of the year.

Merry Christmas (2023)

Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif play the key characters in the film. Ramesh Taurani is the producer of Merry Christmas. Ramesh Taurani’s Tips Industries will produce Merry Christmas in collaboration with Matchbox Pictures Pvt. Ltd. The movie is slated to hit theaters on December 15 2023. Together on screen for the first time Katrina and Vijay Sethupathi are working with director Raghavan for the first time.

Controversy

Vijay Sethupathi Fighting at the airport

As a result of his crew being seen fighting a man at the Bangalore airport Vijay Sethupathi has found himself in controversy once more. An explanation of the airport incident has now been circulated online under the name of Vijay Sethupathi. Arjun Sampath a divisive politician from the Indhu Makkal Katchi has also offered a cash incentive of Rs. 1 000 to anyone who can kick Vijay Sethupathi.

Vijay Sethupathi gave clarification While I was waiting for a flight to Bangalore a man came up to me. He came up to me in a confused manner. I promised to talk more later. Then he said You are also my caste as I am also an actor in a louder tone. Contrary to what he alleges however I made no mention of the country religion or our holy Pasumpon Ayya who regarded Tamils as his life. Then taking into account his fragile state I accepted his apologies. Fans are familiar with my demeanor towards them. But if he keeps disparaging me I won’t think twice about taking the necessary steps the statement says.

The person who claims to have attacked Vijay Sethupathi’s team Maha Gandhi had before accused the actor of disrespecting his congratulations after the actor won the National Award. Maha Gandhi further asserted that Vijay Sethupathi’s entourage attacked him first. However Maha Gandhi does not know the names of the attackers and is awaiting identification from the airport’s CCTV footage.

The Chennai police are thinking about filing a criminal complaint against actor Vijay Sethupathi after a photo of him slicing his birthday cake with a sword went popular on social media. 

The 43-year-old actor also apologized for the incident in a statement. His statement reads My sincere gratitude to movie stars and fans who sent me birthday wishes. A picture that was shot three days ago while I was celebrating my birthday is currently the subject of debate. I used a sword to slice my birthday cake in the picture. In the movie I’ll be in directed by Ponram the sword will be significant. I used the sword to cut my cake since Ponram and the team was there to help me celebrate my birthday.

It was noted by many that this was a poor example. I’m going to start being careful now. I apologize and regret my action if I hurt anyone. Police did however say that they are looking into hiring legal counsel. They also mentioned how the Chennai police had previously detained neighborhood thugs for slicing a cake with a sword indicating that what Vijay did was unlawful and that he should be detained.

A Madras Court attorney named Karthikeyan stated The law is the same for everyone. Vijay Sethupathi should be charged by the police for slicing his birthday cake with a sword.

Vijay Sethupathi and cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan controversy

Vijay Sethupathi’s choice to portray Muralitharan who is thought to have backed the Lankan government during the civil war with the LTTE in the movie 800 caused controversy. 

Many point out that there is video and news reports indicating the cricketer’s apparent support for Gotabaya Rajapaksa the island nation’s President who served as the wartime defense secretary and other remarks made toward the end of the civil war despite Muttiah Muralitharan’s own attempts to explain his case and claim that he never treated Eelam Tamils with disrespect citing his own Tamil origin.

Film industry leaders in Tamil Nadu including Bharathiraja Ameer Thamarai and Cheran as well as a state lawmaker named Kadambur C. Raju had issued statements pleading with Vijay Sethupathi to drop the movie considering the sensitivities of Tamil people.

Muralitharan requested Vijay Sethupathi to withdraw from the project in a statement. Vijay Sethupathi posted the statement and thanked the cricketer.

• Vijay first played a supporting role in TV series or short films before asking for the main role in a movie. Thuru Maa Thavam Kadhalithu Paar The Angel and more short movies are among them.
• Vijay Sethupathi held a position as an accountant before becoming a renowned Tamil actor. Vijay did really work as an accountant for the theater troupe Koothu Patrai. He began thinking about a career in acting while working at Koothu Patrai.
• He had to go to Dubai in order to care for his three siblings in addition to working a few odd jobs in India. He moved to Dubai because he was offered four times as much as he was making in India.
• He joined a marketing firm that specialized in ready-made kitchens after moving back to India in 2003 after spotting Koothupattarai’s poster. He recalled how actor-director Balu Mahendra had encouraged him to pursue an acting career by saying that he had a very photogenic face.
