Vijay Deverakonda, sometimes known as Deverakonda Vijay Sai, was born on  May 9, 1989. He is an Indian actor and film producer who primarily works in Telugu cinema. He is one of Telugu cinema’s highest-paid actors, having appeared on Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list since 2018 and receiving numerous awards such as a Filmfare Award, a Nandi Award, and a SIIMA Award.

Deverakonda made his film debut with Nuvvila (2011) and was praised for his performance in the coming-of-age movie Yevade Subramanyam (2015). He rose to recognition as a main film actor after appearing in the blockbusters Pelli Choopulu (2016) and Arjun Reddy (2017), receiving the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu for his portrayal of an impulsive surgeon in the latter. Deverakonda Vijay Sai was born to Govardhan Rao and Madhavi in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. His family is from Thummanpeta village in the former Mahbubnagar district (now Nagarkurnool). His father was a television serial director who quit due to a lack of success and his mother, Madhavi Deverakonda, is the owner of Speakeasy in Hyderabad

Vijay finished his education up to the tenth standard at Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School in Puttaparthi. He went on to study intermediate at Little Flower Junior College in Hyderabad. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Badruka College of Commerce and Arts.His younger brother, Anand Devarakonda, is also a Telugu actor.

Movies and Career

Vijay’s brief employment with the Hyderabad-based theatre troupe Sutradhar was his first significant step into the entertainment industry. He participated in a three-month programme that introduced him to numerous plays in Hyderabad’s theatre scene. He had a protracted relationship with Ingenium Dramatics.

Deverakonda’s first feature film was the romantic comedy Nuvvila (2011), which Ravi Babu directed. Later, he made a short appearance in Life is Beautiful (2012), directed by Sekhar Kammula. Arjun Reddy

In 2017, Sandeep Reddy Vanga made his directorial debut with the Telugu romantic drama film Arjun Reddy. Bhadrakali Pictures, his brother Pranay Reddy Vanga’s firm, produced the film. In addition to Shalini Pandey and Vijay Deverakonda, supporting roles are played by Jia Sharma, Rahul Ramakrishna, Sanjay Swaroop, Gopinath Bhat, Kamal Kamaraju, and Kanchana. The movie is about a wealthy, alcoholic surgeon named Arjun Reddy Deshmukh (Deverakonda) who struggles with controlling his anger due to Schizotypal Personality Disorder. Following his sweetheart Preethi Shetty’s (Pandey) marriage, Arjun embarks on a self-destructive road; the film centres on his collapse and eventual recovery.

A portion of Arjun Reddy’s inspiration came from Sandeep Vanga’s experiences studying physiotherapy. The film took four to five years to come to reality after he spent two years writing the script. Principal photography started in Hyderabad on June 20, 2016, and it took 86 working days to finish.  The music and score were written by Radhan and Harshvardhan Rameshwar, respectively. The film was edited by Shashank Mali, with photography by Raj Thota.

Produced within a budget range of ₹5–5.15 crore, the movie debuted globally on August 25, 2017. Critics gave it favourable reviews, praising the cast performances, writing, photography, and direction. However, film was criticised for having misogynistic moments and for supposedly encouraging drug consumption among youth. With a distributor share of ₹25.5 crore, the movie grossed ₹51 crore worldwide at the box office.

At the 65th Filmfare Awards South, it was nominated for six categories, including Best Telugu Film and Best Telugu Director for Vanga. Deverakonda won the single prize in the film, Best Telugu Actor. The movie was recreated twice in Tamil, as Varmaa (2020) and Adithya Varma (2019), as well as in Hindi as Kabir Singh (2019).

Dear Comrade

“Dear Comrade” is a 2019 Indian Telugu romantic action drama, directed by Bharat Kamma and starring Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna. It addresses new age love, anger management, and sexual harassment in sports. The protagonist, Bobby, a student union leader, is in love with Lilly, a state-level cricket player. After she rejects him due to his violent tendencies, he leaves home in search of inner peace.

Three years later, Bobby learns that Lilly stopped playing cricket due to a traumatic event. Ramesh Rao, a south-zone selector for BCCI, had sexually harassed Lilly, a revelation that enrages Bobby. He files a complaint against Rao, which becomes a national issue. Despite the investigation, Lilly initially denies the allegations against Rao.

In the meantime, disillusioned, Lilly plans to marry a groom chosen by her family. After confronting her past and triggered by Bobby’s persistent effort to seek justice, Lilly publicly confesses Rao’s harassment. Bobby, now more mature and collected, stands by Lilly to fight against the wrongdoing. Recognising Bobby’s transformation and his unwavering support, Lilly forgives Bobby. They rekindle their relationship, and Bobby helps Lilly resume her cricket career, symbolising the new beginning of both.

Geetha Govindam

In 2018, Parasuram wrote and directed the Telugu romantic comedy Geetha Govindam. It is produced by Bunny Vas under the banner of GA2 Pictures. The film stars Vijay Devarakonda and Rashmika Mandanna as the main performers, with supporting roles played by Nagendra Babu, Rahul Ramakrishna, and Subbaraju.

The film, which was released on August 15 and had a budget of 5 crore, generated 132 crore in income. Some reviews criticised the film for having a tried-and-true plot, but it was praised for its director, performers, and production values.

In Geetha Govindam, Vijay Deverakonda makes an appearance as Vijay Govind, the ideal man for any woman.  In the film, Vijay is shown as the ideal brother, boyfriend, husband, son, and child. Because he’s so flawless, he calls every woman “madam.” He is told, even at the very end, that no girl would ever fall in love with him if he were any more perfect. He is the picture of perfection, but on a bus ride with a girl he’s lately started to like, everything changes in the blink of an eye. What comes next is the story’s primary action.

Although the content of Geetha Govindam isn’t very groundbreaking, the fact that it follows Arjun Reddy directly is in favour of the former. In Geetha Govindam, Deverakonda is allowed the flexibility to experiment with comedy-drama and lighthearted romance, allowing him to fully realise his potential. He is successful in his quest as he delivers another outstanding performance as a bewildered, innocent child attempting to comprehend love and locate his soul mate. The new on-screen chemistry between Devarakonda and Rashmika, who make the movie fascinating to watch, helps the movie succeed despite having a premise that has been done to death. For the first time, they are paired on television, and they work well together in addition to being excellent in their individual parts.

Kushi

“Kushi” is a 2023 Indian Telugu romantic comedy film, which revolves around the characters Viplav and Aaradhya played by Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Viplav moves to Kashmir for peace, but due to the war conditions, he requests a transfer back to Hyderabad, where he meets and falls in love with Aaradhya. Despite their fathers being rivals, their love story flourishes, leading to a marriage against their parents’ wishes due to horoscope mismatches.

The newlyweds face challenges such as a miscarriage and issues in their relationship, almost leading to separation. However, their mutual friends, Zoya and Thomas, share their story of loss and impart advice about solidarity during difficult times. On a quest to make his marriage work, Viplav decides to perform a homam, a spiritual ceremony suggested by Aaradhya’s father, for the well-being of their relationship. Even his atheist father participates in the ceremony, acknowledging his son’s love for Aaradhya.

When it rains, forcing the ceremony to stop, Aaradhya’s father acknowledges that the couple’s love for each other is more vital than any spiritual ceremony. As a result, Viplav and Aaradhya reconcile and later become parents to a baby girl, lovingly named “Kushi”, symbolising the happiness they found in overcoming their trials.

World Famous Lover

“World Famous Lover” (2020) is an Indian Telugu romantic drama by Kranthi Madhav which stars Vijay Deverakonda and Aishwarya Rajesh. Gautham, aspiring to be a writer, is in a failing live-in relationship with Yamini. After their breakup, Gautham starts penning a story about Srinu, a married union leader who has an affair with his officer, Smitha. After realizing his wife Suvarna’s pain, Srinu returns back to her, prompting Gautham to remember his own story with Yamini, which further pushes him to write another story that takes place in Paris.

In Paris, Gautham falls in love with his neighbor Iza, a pilot who loses her eyesight in an accident. Gautham donates his eyes to Iza, symbolizing his sacrifice for love. This parallels Gautham’s sacrifices for Yamini, such as resigning from his job to help Yamini stay employed. But with Yamini’s impending wedding, a tumultuous exchange sees Gautham end up in prison.

Upon release two years later, Gautham’s stories have been published, intriguing the public for its unfinished finale. During his book’s success event, Gautham gives a heartfelt speech about compromises and sacrifices made by both Yamini and Suvarna in his stories, wishing Yamini happiness wherever she is.

The film ends with a reunion of Yamini and Gautham after Yamini’s father reveals she called off her wedding upon Gautham’s imprisonment. The film, although largely panned by critics and audiences, celebrated Aishwarya Rajesh’s performance.

Liger

“Liger – Saala Crossbreed” is a 2022 bilingual sports action film directed by Puri Jagannadh, produced by Dharma Productions and Puri Connects, starring Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday. Deverakonda plays Liger, an MMA fighter with a speech impediment, determined to become a champion under his mother Balamani’s guidance after his father’s death.

Liger’s journey begins in Mumbai when Balamani takes him to Coach Christopher. Amidst rigorous training and personal struggles with his speech, Liger falls in love with Tanya, a wealthy girl who ultimately leaves him when her brother reveals Liger’s stammering issue. Heartbroken but undeterred, Liger’s newfound drive leads him to win the national championship and qualify for an international tournament, which Tanya’s father sponsors.

Before the finals, Tanya is kidnapped, and Liger learns she left him to avoid distracting his career, a decision pushed by his own mother. He discovers that Tanya’s father is indebted to a gangster and that the kidnapper is none other than his idol, MMA legend Mark Anderson. In a twist, Liger must now fight Anderson to rescue Tanya, with the showdown live-streamed during the MMA final.

As Liger faces defeat, he recalls his mother’s wisdom, overpowering Anderson and earning the legendary fighter’s respect. The jury, recognising Liger’s exceptional skill in this impromptu but epic battle, awards him the title of MMA World Champion.

“Liger” not only marks Vijay Deverakonda’s debut into Hindi cinema but also Ananya Panday’s Telugu debut, garnished with Mike Tyson’s special cameo, heightening the film’s international appeal. Despite challenges, Liger’s triumph is a lesson in perseverance and the power of love over personal adversity.

• Deverakonda introduced Rowdy Wear, his apparel label, on October 15, 2018.Later in 2020, Rowdy Wear made its Myntra debut.
