Sudipto Sen’s Biography
Sudipto Sen is an Indian film producer and director. Guruji the Last Monk: Ahead of Time, Lucknow Times and Asma are just a few of the films written and directed by Sudipto Sen. His documentaries and short films include Battle of Saraghat, In the Name of Love, India Fall and Akhnoor.
Sudipto has always been a controversial filmmaker. In his early years, he was also involved in different cultural and social controversies. Sudipto Sen has never shied away from making controversial films that are socially relevant. Kerala Stories seems to be Sudipto’s biggest initiative so far, though none of the above efforts have been particularly well received by the public.

The Last Monk chronicles the journey of a newly married young woman from the world of upstart 30-something IT engineers and corporate managers in New Delhi to the vast and desolate splendor of Ladakh in the Indian Himalayas. It is a journey from the fragile materialism of India’s emerging young middle class to the Buddhist mysticism that permeates all of existence. Under the guidance and mentorship of a young Khenpo, or lay Buddhist monk, she discovers her own spirituality and sexuality beyond the material. Vibrant, lengthy and funny, it is a source of cosmic truth, where otherworldly landscapes merge with the cosmic forces of both the physical and mystical universe.
The Last Monk is part of a growing trend in Indian films that deal with social and spiritual issues arising from the country’s current rapid changes. It is also one of a growing number of Indian films made in English rather than Hindi. In addition to exploring contemporary Indian issues, The Last Monk will also resonate and appeal to European audiences, where interest in Buddhism and the pursuit of spiritual values is growing rapidly.

The Kashmir Valley is one of the most beautiful places on earth, located at the top of the Himalayas. But in today’s world, the ravages of terrorism and counter-terrorism operations have also made its majesty omnipresent. Their leader claimed that since they were on their way to carry out a suicide bombing, this could be their last chance to be with a woman before martyrdom. As the night of Asma’s torture wore on, one of the militants, Intekhaab, showed remorse; he knew that Islam forbade the abuse of women. But he needed to come up with clever ways to delay the inevitable in armed hostilities.
In a small space, the odds are against Inthab. Can he find a way to save Asma—and himself? To prevent Asma from becoming yet another faceless victim of this never-ending conflict, can a new face of “Islamic terrorism” emerge from this desperate situation?
Sudipto Sen’s film “Kerala Stories” (2022)
An upcoming Hindi film in India, Kerala Story, is written, directed and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. The film is based on real events in Kerala when girls who converted to Islam and went missing were determined to join the Islamic State. The film tells the story of Shalini Unnikrishnan (Adah Sharma), a girl who converted to Islam and was one of the 32,000 girls trafficked from Kerala, who is currently being held in an Afghan jail as an ISIS terrorist.

Starring Adah Sharma, Kerala Stories released a trailer last week and has gone viral due to its theme. In the ad, a Hindu woman is caught in a dangerous conversion game. Wearing a veil, she speaks to the camera and says, I want to be a nurse and serve humanity. Now I am Fatima Ba, an ISIS terrorist imprisoned in an Afghan jail. I am not alone. Like me, 32,000 girls have converted to Islam and are buried in the deserts of Syria and Yemen, the film’s promotional material continues. Will no one intervene in Kerala’s deadly game of turning innocent girls into feared terrorists?
The trailer received a lot of negative feedback as soon as it was released. Congress leader VD Satheesan called the trailer of the film a clear fake news and said, “I have seen the trailer. This is clearly fake news. Nothing like this has happened in Kerala. This is being done to damage the reputation of Kerala in other states. There is an agenda of the allies behind this. They have been inciting enmity among people. On what facts and principles is this film based.”
He went on to say that the state police had no records. If there was any central intelligence information, they had to make it available to the public. These are the files, names of women on the list and addresses of women from Kerala who had joined the Islamic State. We are currently fighting all sectarians, both majority and minority. Extremist groups on both sides are working with each other. Though they appear to be at odds with us, in reality they are working together. When one group spreads misinformation or hostility, it helps the opposing cause. Amid this, film director Sudipto Sen has grabbed the attention of the audience with a gritty ad for Kerala Stories.
Kerala Story has sparked a political controversy in Kerala as the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress party opposed the film while the BJP supported it. According to the film’s trailer (ISIS), as many as 32,000 Kerala women were allegedly converted to Islam and forced to join the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
In an interview with Citti Media in 2021, the film’s director explained how he arrived at the number (32,000) using data provided to the Kerala Assembly by former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. AltNews, a website that verifies news reports, said there was “no evidence” to support the claim.
