Have you ever been to this beautiful land of the Alps? The stunning scenery of the Dolomites is breathtaking and worth seeing. The Dolomites have become one of the most unforgettable locations for landscape photography. We will take you on a tour of some amazing places and give you some tips along the way. Let’s get started!
The largest part of the Dolomites is located in the Italian county of Belluno and is part of the World Heritage Site. It was named after the geologist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu, who explored this mountain range at the end of the 18th century. Stunning peaks and exceptional lakes make this place unforgettable. Due to the high magnesium content in these mountains, these mountain tops always react differently to the incoming light.
In Italian it is called ‘enrosidara’, which means ‘the blazing light of the mountain’.
Why the Dolomites?
They have some very unique mountain formations. They are located in the Alps and are easily accessible by train, car or plane from almost anywhere in Europe. These giants have always fascinated me and remind me of places from The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. I am also a huge inspiration to the most famous landscape photographer in the region, Irene Babnik.

Plan your trip
Before you take a long drive to an amazing place, it’s a good idea to do some site scouting to find out where to start and what to visit.
There are many ways to research. I usually do it on Google Maps, Google Earth, and 500px.com. These platforms allow me to easily explore the area and determine where a particular image was taken and what to expect at that location. You can even place stars on Google Maps to mark a specific point so you can easily find it.

I recommend visiting here in early/mid-summer or even early autumn, almost all the trekking routes are accessible at this time of the year and most importantly the weather is not that cold. However, it is always a good idea to carry some warm weather clothes and extra jackets with you, because above 2000 meters the temperature can reach 3-7 degrees Celsius. You can always have a hot tea or a hot meal in the Refugios, and you can even stay there overnight if staying for several nights. These huts are usually quite far from each other.

After gathering all the necessary equipment, I organized the trip with my friends. We stayed in a charming town called Borca di Cadore, which was a great base for visiting the surrounding sites and starting the planned hikes.
Overall, we spent 10 days visiting the following places, which I recommend you check out:

It is easily reached by heading southeast from Cortina d’Ampezzo through Misurina.
The entrance fee to the national park is 25 euros per car.
At Rifugio Auronzo you can enjoy some delicious Italian food and hot drinks, plus the panoramic views are already spectacular – but they get even more spectacular! When we got there, the sky was cloudy, but above this altitude, the weather can change quickly. Based on the weather forecast, we knew it was just showers that would eventually pass. The sun came out, so we started our hike eastwards, towards the towers of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Along the way, to the south, there are the Cardini peaks – these also offer endless possibilities. I’ll cover this location in a future post.
After about 3 hours of hiking, we rested at Malga Rifugio and admired the amazing view.

We were at 2600m above sea level and the past storms were starting to break up and the sun was giving us some amazing rays.
As I was getting ready to shoot the Tre Cime di Lavaredo at 3000 meters, I realized something really cool was happening behind me. I saw this amazing view and scurried out to the grass to find the foreground for this amazing sky.

A Touch of Light Nearby – Malga Refugio
I had to capture this moment quickly because the fog and clouds were only in the frame for a few minutes. Lesson learned: always be aware of what’s happening behind you.

On our first attempt we were caught in a massive thunderstorm and couldn’t get any decent photos, so we decided to come back on a following day.
This location was the closest to our base but the scenery was breathtaking and perfect for both sunrise and sunset. With the small lake and surrounding mountains, it was a great angle to take some precious photos.

We had plenty of time to explore the area and get ready to photograph the reflections of the mountains in the lake. Although all the clouds had dispersed by sunset, we still managed to capture the reflections on the water. Capturing the perfect reflection is not always as easy as it looks. I had to wait until the waves on the water disappeared. A helpful factor is that the wind usually dies down by sunset.
I used a low angle to bring out the reflections of the mountains.

It is also one of the closest points to Cortina, following the winding road heading southwest. The Passo di Giau connects the Boite and Fiorentina valleys.

This pass is a unique impression with great views in almost every direction. The weather played tricks on us again and we had to take shelter in a shelter as the rain was mixed with a lot of hail. The storm has passed leaving these amazing views.
Fanes-Sennes-Brails National Park

The national park is reached an hour and a half west from Borca di Cadore via the Passo Falzarego, a pleasant route through these mountains.
We arrived at the park late in the evening and realized we might not be able to make it all the way to our destination. What should have been a 1 hour hike turned into a 3 hour slow walk halfway up the mountain.
The first two kilometers were quite tough as we gained 400 meters in altitude. As we were panting up the steep hill, a few cows joined us and were almost faster than us.
Passing through beautiful flowery meadows and tall mountains we reached this picturesque place which really exceeded my imagination. It wasn’t even crowded with tourists and we saw only a few people while we were there.

Blooming flowers always make for a great foreground for a photo. Here we can find almost all the elements needed for a great landscape shot: horses, streams, colorful flowers, and unusual rock formations. In this photo, I used the stream to guide your eye through this picturesque valley.

Five Pagodas

The Cinque Towers is a unique place and one of the most photographed rock formations in the Dolomites. It is usually best photographed from the west as the sun rises.
You can choose to go from Passo Falzarego or Passo di Giau. We chose a longer route and started from Giau Pass. It took us about 2 hours to reach Rifugio Scoiattoli in Cinque Torri.
It was cloudy when we visited so we were unable to get clear photos of the five towers, but in the other direction there were some interesting sights on the horizon.

Hughes Foothills

The last place we visited was the furthest from Cortina, about a 3 hour drive, but it was definitely worth the trip.
With its huge wild meadows and small tree houses, it is one of the most unforgettable places in the Dolomites. The highest peak is Sassolongo, which dominates the surrounding landscape at 3180 meters above sea level.
We woke up early and drove from Cortina to capture this beauty, and I dare say we had some luck. It was quite foggy at first, but the rising sun broke through the mist that enveloped the entire valley. These ranch houses on the green meadows are always a delightful element to photograph.

There is something truly unique about the Dolomites and we certainly enjoyed coming back in the fall when the larch trees turn yellow and in some places there is even snow.
