As a child, he attended Jai Prakash Narayan’s charkha samiti and often fell asleep after eating laddu gulab jamun samosas and rasgullas as snacks and sweets. Shekhar received his formal education from Vikas Vidyalaya in Ranchi and St. Xavier’s in Patna. While in school, he loved playing marbles and flying kites. Shekhar tried his hand at debate and drama while studying at Vikas Vidyalaya in Ranchi. He also joined NCC. As a child, he was fascinated by NCC and wanted to join the Indian Navy when he grew up.

Shekhar Suman completed his schooling at St. Xavier’s High School, Patna and Vikas Vidyalaya High School, Ranchi. After completing his high school education, Shekhar enrolled at Ramjas College, University of Delhi, to pursue a degree in Arts (majoring in History).
Shekhar had aspired to become an IAS officer during college. Soon after graduation, Shekhar got a job as a repertory actor at Shri Ram Centre. Shekhar worked there for a while and then briefly worked at Oberoi. He returned to work at Shri Ram Centre for a monthly salary of Rs 625.

Shekhar Suman has 6 members in his family. He has three sisters. His two younger sisters are named Kshamata and Namarata. His father’s name is Phani Bhushan Prasad, who is a famous surgeon and the director general of the health services department of the Bihar government. Shekhar’s mother Usha Prasad died in 2021 due to kidney-related diseases. He is married to Alka Kapur. Shekhar had an elder son who died of a heart attack at the age of 11. Later, he had another son named Adhyayan Suman, who later became a Bollywood actor.

Shekhar Suman married his love Alka Kapoor on May 4, 1983. Alka runs a clothing brand Alkaline. They have a son named Adityajan Suman, who is also an actor.
Shekhar Suman first met her during college when he was a student at IP College. The two met through a mutual friend. They started out as acquaintances and later developed into lovers. Shekhar was mesmerized by Alka’s beauty, but Alka was attracted by Shekhar’s sense of humour.
Shekhar described his love story in an interview, saying, “It was love at first sight and there was no doubt that physical attraction was indispensable. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen and she embodied in every way what an ordinary Indian woman should be like.”
They both dated for a while and soon came out to their parents about their relationship. Shekhar’s parents were happy for the two and supported them, while Alka’s parents were a little worried at first, but later, after meeting Shekhar, they accepted the two.

Shekhar Suman and Alka had a son named Ayush Suman, who died of a heart disease called microelastosis at the age of 11. After his death, both suffered from depression, which lasted for several years.
In an interview, speaking about the sad moments, Shekhar said, “We felt cheated when Aayush left. Sometimes you don’t want to live. But you gradually understand that you have to live for your family. Such events strengthen family bonds. You experience fresh aspects of affection and relationships for the first time.”

Shekhar started his acting career with his debut in the film Hamme Utay in 1984. He made his television debut in 1903 with the serial Dekh Bhai Dekh. He also acted in serials like Waah Janab Kabhi idhar Kabhi Udhar Andaz Amar Simply Shekhar. He also acted in around 25 Bollywood films including Manav Hatya Sansar Anubhav Tridevi Patiparmeshwar and Ranbhoomi.
He also signed several films that were later cancelled, such as Yeh Kaisa Insaaf Neeli Aankhen Shudra and Prem Mandir. He produced the 2006 Hindi film Chandni Chow: A Sad Love Story. In 2014, he made his directorial debut with the Hindi film Ruthless, in which he played Dr. Sameer Saxena. The film starred his youngest son Adityayan Suman and was made in memory of his elder son Aayush Suman, who died young of a heart attack. The film did not do well at the box office, but received critical acclaim.
Suman has judged a number of stand-up comedy shows such as The Great Indian Laughter Challenge (2005; aired on Star One), Comedy Circus – Kaante Ki Takkar (2008; aired on Sony Entertainment Television), Indian Laughter (2012; aired on Life OK), Comedy Superstar (2015; aired on Sony SAB) and Indian Laughter Champions.
In 1997, Shekhar also hosted the late night chat show Movers & Shakers. The show on Sony Entertainment Television was originally planned to be aired once a week, but due to its success, the makers decided to switch it to five nights a week. The show, which featured conversations and comedy performances by Suman with famous guests, eventually gained a cult following and Suman signed a three-year contract worth Rs 35 crore with the channel. Stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Zakir Hussain, Lakha Yashwant, Sinha Kiran Bedi and Vilasrao Deshmukh have appeared on the show.
In 2007, he released the album Kuch Khwaab Aise, singing live for the first time. In the same year, he also lent his voice to the music album Rubaroo, composed by Aadesh Shrivastava and lyrics by Shyam Raj.
Shekhar also participated in two popular television shows, Raaz Pichle Janam ka (2009) and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa (2010), both reality shows.
