Biography

Satish Kaushik was a well-known Indian actor film director producer and screenwriter.  He started his acting career in the late 1970s and appeared in several popular films like Masoom Ram Lakhan Karz and Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja. 

However his breakthrough role came in the form of Mr. India a film in which he played the character of Calendar. After establishing himself as an actor Kaushik turned his attention to writing and directing films. 

He made his directorial debut in 1993 with the film Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja which was a box-office failure. However he bounced back with his next film Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain which was a commercial success.

Age

Satish Kaushik was 66 years old at the time of his death. Satish was born on 13 April 1956 in Mahendragarh Punjab. His zodiac sign is Aries.

Childhood

As a child Satish Kaushik was known for his creativity and sense of humor. He would often entertain his family and friends with his jokes and mimicry. He was also interested in acting and would perform in school plays and local dramas. During his college days Satish Kaushik was actively involved in theatre and performed in various plays. He also started working as a copywriter and wrote scripts for TV commercials.

Education

In 1972 he graduated from Kirori Mal College Delhi University. He attended the National School of Drama and the Film and Television Institute of India.

Wife

Satish Kaushik married Shashi Kaushik in 1985 and the couple had a wonderful relationship. Shashi Kaushik’s wife is a producer best known for her film Chorriyan Chhoron Se Kam Nahi Hoti. 

Shashi is not as active as her husband but she frequently used to join him at any award ceremony or program featuring celebrities. The couple had been together for over thirty years but always appeared to be newlyweds in public. 

Satish Kaushik and Shashi had a baby boy in 1994 who died when he was two years old. The cause of his death has not been revealed. They did however have a daughter Vanshika Kaushik in 2012. The couple had Vanshika with the surrogate process.

Struggle

Satish Kaushik came from a low-income family. According to news18.com before making it big in Bollywood he worked in a cloth mill for Rs 400 per month. In 1979 he moved to Mumbai with the goal of becoming an actor.

What stayed with the audience the most was his role as Calendar in the 1987 smash hit Mr. India. The role created by Shekhar Kapur has a cult following among people of all ages. Calendar literally took people’s hearts away in his role as the cook. 

The film featured Sridevi and Anil Kapoor in lead roles but it was the relationship between the child actors and Satish Kaushik that brought the film to life. The iconic dialogue ‘Calendar khana do’ is as memorable as the cult film’s ‘Mogambo khush hua’. Calendar is a role that has been etched in stone and will be remembered forever in a career spanning over thirty years.

Chanda Mama in Mr & Mrs Khiladi(1997)

Satish Kaushik played Chanda Mama alongside Akshay Kumar and Juhi Chawla in David Dhawan’s Mr & Mrs Khiladi which was released in 1997. The film’s camaraderie and love between Akshay Kumar and Satish Kaushik was an unforgettable and joyful cinematic experience. 

Chanda Mama bills himself as an astrologer and part-time magician. He is frequently seen wandering around the city performing magic tricks and offering people his astrological services.

Satish Kaushik’s character of Pappu Pager in Deewana Mastana (1997) is a classic example of comic relief in a movie. Pappu Pager is a bumbling lovable and amusing character who serves as a sidekick to the film’s main antagonist Bunnu (played by Govinda).

Ram Lakhan was directed by Subhash Ghai and starred Rakhee Jackie Shroff Anil Kapoor Dimple Kapadia Madhuri Dixit and Amrish Puri in lead roles. Satish played Kashiram alongside Anupam Kher as Devdhar in one of Indian cinema’s funniest duos.

Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja

Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja is a Bollywood film directed by Satish Kaushik. The film was released in 1993 and stars Anil Kapoor Sridevi and Jackie Shroff in the lead roles. It is a musical drama film about a thief who falls in love with a princess and decides to turn over a new leaf in order to win her heart. The film was highly anticipated due to its big budget and star-studded cast but was ultimately a commercial failure at the box office. However it has since gained a cult following among fans of Bollywood cinema.

Tere Naam

Tere Naam is a 2003 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film directed by Satish Kaushik. The film stars Salman Khan and Bhoomika Chawla in lead roles with Sachin Khedekar Savita Prabhune Ravi Kishan and others in supporting roles. 

The film tells the story of Radhe a college student who falls in love with a girl named Nirjara. However their love story is cut short when Nirjara’s family forces her to marry someone else. Devastated by the loss of his love Radhe spirals into a self-destructive cycle of violence and eventually ends up in a mental asylum. 

Tere Naam was a commercial success and received critical acclaim for Salman Khan’s performance. The film’s soundtrack composed by Himesh Reshammiya was also a hit with songs like Tere Naam Lagan Lagi and Odhni Odh Ke becoming popular.

Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain

Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain is a Bollywood romantic drama film directed by Satish Kaushik. The film was released in 1999 and stars Anil Kapoor and Kajol in the lead roles. Satish Kaushik’s direction is simple and effective allowing the story and the performances of the actors to shine through. 

The chemistry between Anil Kapoor and Kajol is palpable and their performances are heartfelt and convincing. Sadashiv Amrapurkar delivers a memorable performance as the conniving mother-in-law. Kaagaz is a 2021 Indian biographical drama film directed by Satish Kaushik. The film stars Pankaj Tripathi in the lead role and tells the true story of Lal Bihari a farmer from Uttar Pradesh who was declared dead on paper by corrupt government officials. 

Pankaj Tripathi delivers a powerful performance as Lal Bihari bringing both humor and pathos to his character. His portrayal of a man who refuses to give up in the face of adversity is both inspiring and heart-warming. The supporting cast including Monal Gajjar Amar Upadhyay and Sandeepa Dhar also deliver strong performances. 

Satish Kaushik’s direction is tight and effective keeping the narrative moving at a brisk pace. The film’s cinematography by Arkodeb Mukherjee captures the rural setting beautifully and the music composed by Pravesh Mallick adds to the film’s emotional resonance.

Controversy

Neena Gupta Pregnancy Controversy

Neena discussed her old friendship with Kaushik in her book. She also revealed that when she became pregnant with cricketer Viv Richards’ child Kaushik advised her to pass the child off as his after marrying. Neena was unmarried at the time and was afraid of the consequences of having a child. In her book Neena revealed that the acclaimed actor-director told her that if the child is born with dark skin she can simply say it’s his and they can marry. Nobody will suspect anything he claims. 

In a subsequent interview Kaushik discussed the situation saying that Neena and he had been friends since 1975 and that only a few people were aware of her pregnancy. He stated that he offered his support because he did not want her to be alone.

Net Worth

Satish Kaushik had a net worth of Rs 120 crore. Satish Kaushik allegedly owned a bungalow in Mumbai’s Versova neighbourhood. He also had a farmhouse in Chandigarh. According to reports Satish Kaushik owned several expensive cars including an Audi Q7 an Audi Q3 and an MG Hector. He was said to love cars.

Death

Satish Kaushik a well-known Bollywood actor and director died on March 9 2023 at the age of 66. According to reports Kaushik died of a heart attack while driving in his car. Doctors tried to save Kaushik but he died in the hospital. As soon as word of Satish Kaushik’s death spread Bollywood celebrities expressed their condolences on Twitter and Instagram. Sanjay Dutt Abhishek Bachchan Manoj Bajpayee and Nawazudding Siddique have all shared heartfelt messages in his memory.

His close associate and best friend Anupam Kher took to Twitter to announce the sad news. Kher’s Tweet stated “I know ‘death is the ultimate truth of this world’ But I never thought in my dreams that I would write this thing about my best friend #SatishKaushik while alive. Such a sudden full stop on friendship of 45 years!! Life will NEVER be the same without you SATISH! Om Shanti!” Kher also shared a black and white photo where he and Kaushik are seen together
