Sarah Davenport is a well-known British philanthropist and former art dealer who is widely credited with founding the breast cancer support charity Breast Haven. She rose to fame in 1996 when she sold her gallery to start a breast cancer support program. The program has opened centers in five major locations across the UK, with plans for a further three.

Sarah Davenport was born in London in 1962 and grew up in Herefordshire and London. In 1980, she entered Cambridge University, where she graduated with a degree in History of Art. After graduation, Sarah Davenport worked for the publishers Hodder & Stoughton before returning to the art world, selling 18th and 19th century paintings at the Cadogan Gallery in London. In 1985, she opened the Sarah Davenport Gallery in Knightsbridge, one of only a few galleries in the world specializing in 18th and 19th century dog ​​portraits. She owned the gallery until 1996.

In 1993, her children’s carer, Wendy Ricketts, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Speaking about the NHS (National Health Service), Sarah Davenport noted that while the dedication of doctors and nurses from a medical perspective was unquestionable, the emotional and spiritual support provided by the NHS was inadequate. After speaking with nurses, doctors and patients who had similar concerns, Sarah Davenport realised that she was noticing a gap in the care these patients were receiving.

Sarah Davenport approached several large charities to raise initial funding to manage and set up clinics around the country based on her concept. When the charities she approached turned her proposal down, it became clear that if Sarah wanted her idea to become a reality, she would have to do it herself.

Therefore, on October 10, 1996, Sarah Davenport retired from her position as a portrait dealer and sold her entire gallery collection at Bonhams auction house in Knightsbridge, London.[10] In this way, and by selling the lease on her art gallery, Sarah raised the funds to purchase a building for use by the Breast Cancer Shelter, giving the charity millions of dollars’ worth of donations over the charity’s first twenty years.

It took more than six months before she found the perfect site for the charity’s first centre – a ramshackle church on Fulham Broadway, next to the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital and the specialist breast cancer unit at Charing Cross Hospital.
