Indian cricketer Sameer Rizvi was born on 6 December 2003 and currently plays for the Uttar Pradesh domestic cricket team. He is known as “Right-handed Suresh Raina” on social media because his batting style is very similar to Raina. He has also represented India in the under-19 age group.
At the Gandhi Bagh Academy in Meerut, he trained under the close supervision of his uncle Tanjib Akhtar and started playing cricket at the age of 11. During the 2011 Ranji Trophy match between Saurashtra and Uttar Pradesh, Rizvi caught the attention of the former captain Suresh Raina, who was astounded by the fielding ability of the five-year-old. On 27 January 2020, at the age of 16, he made his first-class debut for Uttar Pradesh in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy. In the Uttar Pradesh T20 League, 20-year-old cricketer Sameer Rizvi made a name for himself. On 11 December 2021, he made his first-class debut for Uttar Pradesh in the 2021-2022 Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the 2023 Uttar Pradesh T20 League, while playing for Kanpur Superstars, he amassed 455 runs in nine innings, including two centuries (the fastest century in the tournament, scored in just 47 deliveries). He also raised the bar by being the team’s most consistent six-hitter throughout the tournament.
Several IPL teams including Kings XI Punjab, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals were impressed by his batting performance in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League and invited him for trials. But due to his duties with the Uttar Pradesh Under-23 team, he had to miss the trials.
In December 2023, Chennai Super Kings bought him at an auction for Rs 8.40 crore in preparation for the 2024 Indian Premier League. The next day, media representatives, neighbors and a Uttar Pradesh politician came to his residence after Chennai Super Kings bought him at a record price at the 2024 IPL auction. Eventually, he became the most profitable uncapped player at the 2024 Indian Premier League auction.
