Rohini was born as Rohini Oak in the Pune district of Maharashtra. Rohini Hattangadi attended Renuka Swaroop Memorial Girls High School in Pune, Maharashtra, India for her early schooling. Husband

Rohini Hattangadi’s husband’s name is Jayadev Hattangadi. It was at NSD that she crossed paths with Jayadev Hattangadi, who would later become her husband. Jayadev was also a student at NSD, pursuing his training in direction. Together, they shared a common passion for the performing arts. They got married in the year 1977 and later had a son. Jaydev Hattangadi passed away due to cancer on December 5, 2008, at the age of 60.

Theatre

Rohini began her career on the Marathi stage. While still at NSD, Jayadev and Rohini founded the Awishkar Marathi theatre troupe in Mumbai, which went on to produce over 150 plays. In 1975, she received the Maharashtra State Drama Festival’s Best Actress Award for her portrayal in Changuna, a Marathi adaptation of Federico Garcia Lorca’s Spanish classic Yerma. Awishkar in Mumbai produced the play. She is the first woman to appear in the Kannada folk play Yakshagana, directed by K. Shivaram Karanth, and the first woman in Asia to appear in the Japanese Kabuki play Ibaragi, directed by Shozo Sato.

Aparajita, based on a Bengali story by Nitin Sen, was one of Hattangadi’s most well-received plays. This 120-minute solo-act play, first premiered in 1999, has been performed in both Hindi and Marathi over the years. It was also her first performance in a long time directed by her husband, Jayadev Hattangadi. She has appeared in five of his plays, including Medea, a Greek tragedy penned by Euripides. Her other theatre credits include Vijay Tendulkar’s Mitra Chi Gosht, directed by Vinay Apte, Hori, based on Premchand’s Godaan and produced by IPTA, and, most recently, the Hindi play Kohra, in which she co-starred alongside Sudha Chandran and Babul Bhavsar. Hattangadi and her husband Jayadev ran Kalashray, a Mumbai-based institution for arts research, education, and talent development that worked with the disadvantaged and developed methods for strong communication. She received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2004 for her contribution to Indian theatre.

Film

Hattangadi made her cinematic debut in 1978 with Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan, directed by Saeed Akhtar Mirza. The film was nominated for a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film. Her next appearances were in Mirza’s Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Ata Hai (1980), which won the same award, and Rabindra Dharmaraj’s play Chakra (1981). In these flicks, her roles were minor. Gandhi (1982), based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, was her next film. She portrayed Kasturba Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s wife, who was played by Ben Kingsley. The picture was a critical and commercial triumph, and it earned the Academy Award for Best Picture, among other honours. Hattangadi’s performance earned her international acclaim, and she was the first Asian woman to win the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1983. Despite the triumph of her portrayal in Gandhi, the film was also credited with multiplying her screen age. This was quickly followed by a succession of critically lauded performances, beginning with Mahesh Bhatt’s Arth (1982), for which she received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. She won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1984 for her performance in Govind Nihalani’s satire play Party (1984). She followed it up with two films, Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! and Saaransh, both released in 1984, in which she played ageing housewives. She played the female lead in Saaransh, with Anupam Kher in his debut performance. Hattangadi and Kher portrayed B.V. and Parvati, an elderly couple dealing with the death of their son. Her portrayal got her a nomination for a Filmfare Award for Best Actress, but also solidified her image as a mother, and by this time she was type-cast in motherly parts in Hindi commercial cinema.

She was later renowned for her brief role in N. Chandra’s Pratighaat (1987), as well as her comedic performances in Pankaj Parashar’s ChaalBaaz and Ladaai, both of which were released in 1989. In Parashar’s Jalwa (1987), she played Sribaby, a heroin lord. However, she was offered challenging roles in Indian parallel film. Govind Nihalani’s Aghaat (1985), Muzaffar Ali’s Anjuman (1986), and Girish Kasaravalli’s Mane and Ek Ghar (1991) are among her films from this era. In 1990, she was cast as Amitabh Bachchan’s ageing mother in Agneepath, for which she received her second Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Rajkumar Santoshi cast her in several of his films during the 1990s and 2000s, including Damini (1993), Ghatak: Lethal (1996), and Pukar (2000). In 1995, she co-starred in the Malayalam film Agnidevan with Mohanlal. She portrayed a Jnanpith Award-winning author and the matriarch of a joint-family that owns a major regional newspaper in the film. Her performance in Rajkumar Hirani’s directorial debut Munnabhai MBBS (2003) was well received, and she later reprised her role in the Tamil remake, Vasool Raja MBBS (2004). She also played Shubhhu Mavshi in the Marathi film Mumbai Pune Mumbai 3 (2018).

Television

Her television roles include Vimla Pandey in Mahayagya, a Hindustani classical singer in Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum, a dedicated social worker in Intehaan, and the worried and unlettered Sakkubai in Hindustani. Hattangadi starred in the Marathi television series Char Divas Sasuche and Vahinisaheb, which aired on ETV Marathi and Zee Marathi, respectively.She had a parallel lead part in Zee Marathi’s Marathi serial Honar Sun Me Hya Gharchi. Gandhi

Gandhi is a 1982 epic biographical film based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the twentieth-century Indian independence fight against the British Empire.
