He is the only son of composer Sachin Dev Burman and is nicknamed Pancham.

Four of the songs were sung by Burman's later wife Asha Bhosle. Nasir Hussain later hired Burman and lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri to compose music for six of his films, including Yaadon Ki Baaraat Pyar Ka Mausam and Baharon Ke Sapne. Burman's music for Padosan received rave reviews. Meanwhile, he continued to work as his father's assistant.
In the 1970s, Burman became extremely popular when he sang Kishore Kumar's songs in films starring Rajesh Khanna.
