Ravi Kumar Dahiya’s father’s name is Rakesh Dahiya and his mother’s name is Urmila Devi. Ravi Kumar was born in Nahri village in Sonipat district of Haryana. Ravi always had a passion for wrestling but his financial condition forced him to work very hard to overcome all the challenges in his life. As his father did not have any land, he made a living by renting out the farm.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya completed his schooling from a government school in Sonipat, Haryana. He also holds a bachelor’s degree. His father walked almost 40 km from Nahri to Delhi to buy fruits for Ravi. During his wrestling career, his necessities used to cost money. However, Ravi’s father did not witness his son’s bronze medal-winning performance at the World Championships. He was unable to see Ravi’s performance as he was working in the fields. Rakesh Kumar put in a lot of effort to ensure that his son never gave up on his ambitions.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya’s career

Ravi Kumar Dahiya started wrestling as a teenager. He won a silver medal in the 55kg freestyle category at the 2015 World Youth Wrestling Championships in El Salvador. In 2017, he sustained an injury that kept him out of the competition for over a year. He was selected to compete in the semi-finals of the competition. Due to his injury, Ravi had no sponsors and so he ended up having to rely on supporters to help him recover. However, he recovered quickly and did very well. In his comeback year, he won India’s only medal – a silver in the 57kg category – at the 2018 World U23 Wrestling Championships in Bucharest. Dahiya was a member of the champion Haryana Hammers, who went undefeated in the 2019 Pro Wrestling League.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya finished fifth at the 2019 Asian Wrestling Championships in Xi’an after losing the bronze medal match.

In order to qualify for one of the six open quota spots for the 2020 Summer Olympics, Ravi Kumar Dahiya made his first appearance in the global championships in 2019, defeating 2017 world champion Yuki Takahashi in the quarterfinals and European champion Arsen Harutyunyan in the round of 16. In the semifinals, he was defeated by defending champion and eventual gold medalist Zaur Uguev and settled for bronze. Dahiya joined the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ Target Olympic Podium Program (TOPS) in October 2019 for his medal win.

At the Tokyo Olympics, Ravi Kumar Dahiya reached the men’s 57kg semifinals by defeating Oscar Tigreiros of Colombia and Georgy Vangelov of Bulgaria right from the start. Ravi Kumar Dahiya won his first two matches at the 2020 Summer Olympics with better technical skills. After falling behind in the match, he defeated Kazakh wrestler Nurisram Tsarnaev by fall in the semifinals. According to rumors, Dahiya was bitten by Nurisram Tsarnaev in the semifinals. Dahiya had to settle for silver in the title match after losing to Republic of China wrestler Zaur Ugyev by a score of 4-7. He became the second Indian wrestler to win an Olympic silver medal after Sushil Kumar Dahiya.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya won the gold medal in the 2022 Yasar Dagu Championships, defeating Uzbekistan’s Gulomjun Abdullayev 11-10. Ravi Kumar Dahiya made history by winning a gold medal for his country in the men’s freestyle 57kg wrestling event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. In the final, Ravi defeated Nigeria’s Ebikwenimo Wilson 10-0 to win his first Commonwealth Games gold medal. The match took 2 minutes and 16 seconds. In the opening stages, Dahiya completely dominated and prevented his opponent from scoring.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya was left with a painful bite on his bicep by his opponent Nurisram Tsarnaev during their semi-final match at the Tokyo Olympics. Photos show Ravi Dahiya left with a deep bite mark on his right bicep after one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the tournament. The fourth-seeded Indian was trailing 2-9 after Tsarnaev used a few Fitleys, but Dahiya rallied as time went on and dominated his opponent with his leg attacks to win. Despite falling far behind, Dahiya remained calm, showing incredible mental toughness and dramatically changing the outcome of the match in his favour.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya led 2-1 after the first period, but Tsarnaev was ready and attacked the Indian fighter’s left leg. After firmly grasping it, he turned three times and scored six points in an instant. Suddenly, Dahiya was behind and facing defeat, but his greater stamina and technical skills were still in play. He had only enough time – one minute – to change the situation, and he did it gracefully.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya knocked Tsarnaev down with a double leg, then caught him as he fell and finished the fight with a powerful clinch. Dahiya was also unbeatable in his previous fights; the 23-year-old won both of his matches by technical advantage and reached the final.
