I wanted to get away from my life, from the insects buzzing in my ears while I slept, from the energy shortages that barely allowed me to get two meals a day, from watching our house flood when it rained heavily. Although my parents tried their best, there was only so much they could do because my mother was a cleaner and my father was a cart puller.
I would spend hours watching hockey players practice because there was an academy nearby. I wanted to play. My father’s daily income of Rs 80 left him with no money to buy me a stick. Since I didn’t have any training gear, I wore a salwar suit and started practicing with a broken hockey stick I found on the field.
But I was determined to prove my worth. I begged the coach to give me a chance and finally Maine bahut muhkil se convinced Kiya unko! On the other hand, when I told my family what happened, my family said “Ladkiya Ghar ka kaam hi karti hai” and “Hum tumhe dress pehen Kar khelne Nahi denge”.
I would beg them to “please let me go”. If I failed, I would comply with your wishes. My family reluctantly gave in. Training would start in the early morning. Mom would stay up late to watch the sky to see if it was time to wake me up, because we didn’t even have a clock.
My coach was there for me in good times and bad, buying me hockey equipment and shoes. He even let me stay with his family and provided me with food. I would practice every day and put in a lot of effort. I remember getting my first salary; I got 500 rupees after winning a game and giving the money to my dad. She had never held so much money in her hands before. I promised my family that one day we would have our own home, and I did everything I could to fulfill that promise.
After representing my state in many tournaments, I was finally called up to the national team at the age of 15! Despite this, my relatives would only ask about my upcoming wedding. However, my dad taught me to give it my all. With the help of my family, I worked hard to represent India to the best of my ability and was eventually named the captain of the Indian hockey team.
Not long after that, while I was at home, a friend of Dad’s from the past came to visit us. Dad brought his granddaughter with him and told me that she was so impressed with me that she wanted to play hockey. I cried with joy.
We cried together and hugged each other. I’m not done yet; this year I’m determined to give them and my coach what they’ve always wanted – a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics – in return.
