She relied mainly on customer feedback and validation, as she had no fashion week or social media presence to put her in the spotlight. ‘There was a lot of interest in the brand,’ she recalls. ‘We were soon featured in every fashion magazine and were invited to Singapore and Miami Fashion Weeks alongside other well-known Indian designers like Sabyasachi and Rina Dhaka.
Singhal moved to New York in 2004 after marrying her longtime lover Nirvaan Kirpalani. Though she continued to travel to India to promote her collections, her focus had shifted to branding and marketing in the U.S. She encountered some obstacles, including that elite retailers like Henri Bendel weren’t ready to take on another Indian designer.
‘I chose to do presentations and pop-up shops because I couldn’t wait for the phone calls,’ she adds. Her first presentation attracted just six visitors; today, the US accounts for more than half of her online sales. Customers want something more modern; the Indian clothing available in the US is outdated,’ she continues.
