The film is the culmination of her nearly four-decade career. The plot revolves around the life of a woman sentenced to life in prison for murder. During her imprisonment, she is given a choice between two men: a prison doctor who once saved her life while in prison, and a man she knew from her past.

In Bandini, Nutan plays the protagonist Kalyani, a young woman serving jail time for murder. Nutan’s nuanced portrayal of the character was widely appreciated and won critical acclaim. She deftly conveyed the emotions of a woman who has been wronged by society and struggles to find redemption.

The film is based on the Bengali novel Tamassi by Jharasandar (Charu Chandra Chakrabarti), which tells the story of a former prison warden who spent most of his career as a jailer in North Bengal and created many fictional versions of his experiences. Bandini was the tenth highest-grossing film of the year and was rated a “semi-hit” at the Indian box office despite critical acclaim and a sweep of the Filmfare Awards that year, winning six awards including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress. It is still considered a landmark film of the 1960s, especially as the last feature film of director Bimal Roy.
