Muscle pain will bother you in one way or another, especially if you are an active person. There are many tools that can help with this problem, but MyoStorm’s massage ball Meteor stands out for combining heat therapy and vibration therapy. It was invented by runner Shaquille Walker and engineer Jono DiPeri. As of 2024, MyoStorm is valued at $5 million.
Founder
Jonathan “Jono” DiPerry and Shaquille Walker are both from Provo, Utah. They met in high school as Mormons and later became missionaries in Manchester, England.
Walker won the Georgia High School Association AAAA track and field 800-meter championship in 2010 and 2011. He also once became the world record holder in the 800-meter dash.
He attended Brigham Young University with DiPerry, where he continued to be a student-athlete. Jono focused on studying mechanical engineering and received his bachelor’s degree in 2018.
Founding MyoStorm
During missionary service in England, the two young men exchanged ideas and planned to work together in the future. During college, Jono’s research involved the effects of vibrations on the body.
He discovered that certain frequencies were better than others for treating muscle injuries. Jono also realized that these frequencies were rarely used therapeutically. So he called Shaquille, who was experiencing muscle pain from running.
In 2018, the two designed a massage roller that uses special vibrations and heat to speed up healing. They named it the MyoStorm Meteor. They launched a Kickstarter campaign hoping to raise $20,000, but ended up raising $70,000. They have since sold 900 units.
Shark Tank
In 2019, Shaquille Walker and Jono DiPeri presented their invention on Shark Tank Season 11. They were accompanied by their professor, Olympic marathoner Jared Ward. The three offered to sell 10% of MyoStorm for $150,000.
They gave each shark a massage ball, and everyone loved it. However, investors were concerned that the product was too expensive. However, they knew that was a problem they could solve later. A bidding war soon began.
Mark Cuban first offered $250,000 for 20% of the company. Kevin O’Leary and guest shark Matt Harrington then made their move. Lori Greiner offered $150,000 for 5% and $1 in royalties, but wanted to lower the price. The entrepreneurs agreed, and the deal was done.
Post-Shark Tank Updates
After investing, Lori Greiner got what she wanted. The price of the MyoStorm Meteor was reduced from $149 to $99. This led to a significant increase in sales, as products under $100 tend to sell better.
The company has also expanded its offerings with a new product, the Meteor 2.0, which features cardio functionality and USB-C charging. All MyoStorm massage products are available on Amazon, Walmart, eBay and its official website.
Shaquille and Jono have attracted more attention to their startup by signing endorsement deals with professional athletes. MyoStorm has grown to a point where it has annual revenues of about $1.8 million. MyoStorm is currently valued at about $5 million.
