Murali Vijay is an Indian international cricketer who plays as a right-handed batsman. He was a regular member of the Indian cricket team until 2018 and currently plays first-class cricket for Tamil Nadu.
Vijay started playing cricket at the age of 17 after failing his Grade 12 exams and subsequently played cricket for the Chennai club. Early career
Vijay made his debut in the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy and shot to fame. He finished third in the tournament, behind Karnataka's Robin Uthappa and Bengal's Manoj Tiwari. He made his debut for Delhi at the start of this tournament, scoring a fifty in his first innings.
In the 2007–08 season, Vijay played in all seven Ranji Trophy matches for Tamil Nadu, scoring 582 runs at an average of 58.2, including two hundreds, with his highest score being 230 against Saurashtra. In September 2008, Vijay was selected for the India A team to play two four-day matches against New Zealand A.
Testing career
In November 2008, Vijay made his debut in the fourth and final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Batting alongside Virender Sehwag, Vijay helped India get off to a strong start in both innings. Vijay scored 33 and 41, and his first innings scores were 98 and 116.
Vijay was selected in the Indian ODI squad for the first three matches against England after his impressive performance in the first Test match. He did not play and was replaced after the first three matches as veteran batsman Sachin Tendulkar returned from a rest.
In July 2014, Vijay scored his first Test century outside India against England at Trent Bridge. He scored 402 runs in five matches, becoming the highest scorer for India in that series. In June 2015, he scored his sixth Test century against Bangladesh in a single-match Test series.
ODI Career
On 27 February 2010, Vijay made his ODI debut against South Africa in the third and final One-Day International. He scored 25 runs off just 16 balls. Vijay was selected for the 2010 5-match ODI series in New Zealand, where he averaged 30 in the first three matches. Afterwards, he was replaced by wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel for the remaining two ODIs.
International T20 career
Vijay was selected for the ICC World Twenty20 Championship in 2010. He averaged less than 15 in a poor tournament for the Indian team and failed to get off to a good start in all the matches.
IPL Career
Vijay played for his hometown team Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League until his sixth season, before joining Delhi Daredevils. In April 2016, he was chosen as the captain of Kings XI Punjab, replacing South African David Miller midway through the season. He missed the entire 2017 season due to wrist surgery.
