Natasha Thahane reacts to Mpho Sebeng's passing
“Whenever we talk about what is normal or abnormal, we compare it to some standard, maybe some cultural or religious practice of what grief should look like or how long it should last. It's not written down, but it's the common understanding.
“While the experience of grief is universal, it is still a subjective experience for each individual. Grief for me may be different from grief for someone else, even within the same family.
“When we talk about strange ways of grieving, often the people around the grieving person don't understand what's going on or don't know how to support them. As a psychologist, I'm not curious about comparing common things to how a person grieves. I'm more curious about what it might mean for that individual.
“If someone posts on social media that they tried to call their deceased loved one, it’s probably their way of trying to cope with the reality of the loss. When they talk about the stages of grief, denial might be one of them.
“Sometimes, even when we have accepted the grief, the reality and permanence of the loss is still difficult to accept. You may wonder if calling is a way of trying to connect with the deceased, trying to feel close to them. It gives the feeling that the individual is still alive even if not in the flesh but at least in ourselves.”
