In December 1969, fast bowler Mohinder made his debut against Australia in Chennai. At the peak of his career, he was India’s top batsman, mainly playing at No.3. He had excellent control of the ball and could bowl cuts and spins with ease. During his unusual run-up, he slowed down as he approached the delivery line. He looked lethargic, but mentally he was strong.
Mohinder Amarnath played 69 Test matches, scoring 4,378 runs at an average of 42.50, including 11 fifties and 32 wickets at an average of 55.68. He played 85 One-Day Internationals, scoring 1,924 runs at an average of 30.53, with a highest score of 102. He also took 46 wickets at an average of 42.84.
Towards glory
Mohinder Amarnath spent much of the 1970s on and off the field. In the 1982-83 season, he played 11 away Tests against Pakistan and the West Indies, scoring 1,182 runs, including five centuries.
Mohinder capped his campaign with India’s victory in the Prudential World Cup in 1983. He was named the man of the match for his all-round performances in both the semi-final and the championship match.
In the semi-final against England, he helped India restrict their opponents to 213 runs, taking the wickets of David Gower and Mike Gatting. Amarnath scored 46 runs in the knock, helping India win by 6 wickets. The crucial 43-run alliance of Malcolm Marshall and Geoffrey Dujon was broken by Amarnath, who eventually bowled both of them. He also took the final wicket of Michael Holding as India won the World Cup for the first time.

1982-1983 Pakistan Series
Imran Khan, aided by the astute Sarfaraz Nawaz, was at his most lethal in the series. Due to Pakistan’s pace, India lost the second, third and fourth Tests 3-0. Mohinder Amanat and Imran Khan took a combined 40 wickets in the series and were jointly named Player of the Series.
The career of batting maestro Gundappa Viswanath was cut short by the disastrous series against India. Mohinder Amarnath had been the only hope for the Indian batting line-up throughout the series. 1983 World Cup
The 1983 Cricket World Cup was the year that Mohinder Amarnath became famous. He won the Man of the Match award in both the final and the semi-final for his outstanding performance in helping India win their first World Cup and first One-Day International.
In the semi-final against England, two top players, David Gower and Mike Gatting, were beaten by his accurate bowling. He conceded the lowest number of runs among all Indian bowlers, conceding only 27 runs in 12 overs, an average of 2.25 runs per over. He scored 46 runs in the subsequent over, giving India a good start. He was awarded the Man of the Match award.
India batted first in the title match against the West Indies, who had perhaps the strongest bowling line-up in the world, including Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, Andy Roberts and Joel Garner. The Indian team as a whole scored only 183 runs in 54.4 innings, well below the required 60, and therefore performed poorly.
India’s innings gained much-needed solidity thanks to Amarnath’s calm and composed batting against the West Indian fast bowling. He held the batting line for the longest time (80 balls) and scored 26 runs. While holding the batting line for a long time is not usually a good thing in limited-overs matches as India did not last a full 60 overs, the batsmen at the other end had chances throughout Amarnath’s over.
Sandeep Patil and Krishnamachari Srikkanth shared the top spot with 38 points each (27 runs). India had little chance of winning due to their poor batting performance. Taking advantage of the ideal weather and pitch conditions, Indian bowlers defeated West Indies by just 140 runs and won the title by 43 runs.
Amarnath and Madan Lal took three wickets each and tied for the top wicket-taker. Amarnath was once again the best bowler, conceding only 12 runs in 7 overs, an average of 1.71 runs per over, the same as in the semi-final. Amarnath was named Man of the Match in the semi-final. Amarnath was also given the honour of taking the decisive wicket in the match. It was a famous knock that saw him and his captain and friend, legendary Indian cricketer Kapil Dev, lift the World Cup as the team’s vice-captain.
Cricket Coach
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mohinder Amarnath hosted a popular weekly television show offering cricket coaching instruction. The show was called Cricket with Mohinder Amarnath. The show included method presentations and discussions with guests, most of whom were members of the Indian national team at the time.
Since the show was aired on national television in India and made cricket accessible to the masses, it had a considerable following among the youth of the time, especially when the 1987 Reliance Cup was held in India, young people were obsessed with cricket.
