Mohanlal’s Biography

Mohanlal is a famous Indian actor film producer playback singer television host and film distributor. In addition to occasionally making appearances in films in the languages of Tamil Hindi Telugu and Kannada Mohanlal mostly works in the Malayalam film industry. Mohanlal has had a long and successful career appearing in more than 400 films over the course of four decades. His peers in the Indian film industry have lauded Mohanlal’s contributions to Malayalam cinema. 

For his services to Indian cinema the Indian government awarded him the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019 India’s fourth and third highest civilian honours. He received the honorary rank of Lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army in 2009 making him the first actor in India to receive such a distinction.

At the age of 18 Mohanlal made his acting debut in the Malayalam film Thiranottam in 1978; however the film’s premiere was postponed for 25 years due to censorship concerns. He made his acting debut as the antagonist in the 1980 romantic movie Manjil Virinja Pookkal. In the ensuing years he progressed to secondary starring roles while still playing villains.

By the mid-1980s he established himself as a bankable leading actor and acquired celebrity after acting in several hit films in 1986; the murder drama Rajavinte Makan released that year heightened his stardom. Although Mohanlal favours working in Malayalam movies he has also made appearances in a few Hindi Tamil Telugu and Kannada movies. His best-known non-Malayalam movies are the Telugu film Janatha Garage (2016) the Hindi crime drama Company (2002) and the Tamil political drama Iruvar (1997).

Mohanlal has won various awards including nine Kerala State Film Awards the Filmfare Awards South and five National Film Awards including two Best Actor a Special Jury Mention a Special Jury Award and an award for Best Feature Film (as producer). In 2010 and 2018 the University of Calicut and Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit respectively awarded him honorary doctorates.

Mohanlal is renowned for his charitable endeavours as well. In order to develop and offer high-impact and targeted programmes to the impoverished sectors of society in the areas of healthcare and education he formed the ViswaSanthi Foundation a non-profit charitable organisation.

Mohanlal’s Family

Mohanlal’s father’s name is Viswanathan Nair and his mother’s name is Santhakumari. Viswanathan was a former bureaucrat and Law Secretary with the Kerala Government. 

He is Viswanathan Nair and Santhakumari’s youngest kid. Mohanlal’s elder brother’s name was Pyarelal. Pyarelal died in the year 2000 in a military exercise. At his family residence in Thiruvananthapuram Mohanlal grew up at Mudavanmugal.

Mohanlal’s Education

Mohanlal attended the Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram before completing his studies at Mahatma Gandhi College and earning a bachelor’s degree in commerce. Mohanlal’s first performance was as a ninety-year-old man in a theatre production of Computer Boy while he was in sixth grade. He won the Kerala state wrestling championship in 1977 and 1978.

Mohanlal’s Marriage

The producer of Tamil films K. Balaji’s daughter is Suchitra. After watching several of the actor’s films in which he played villains Suchitra developed a deep hatred for Mohanlal. Whenever she would see him on the screen she would become enraged. Later she understood that if someone hates him for his performance it means the actor did his character justice. Suchitra began to like the actor and gradually began to send greetings to him. Suchitra grew particularly fond of Mohanlal.

Suchitra first met Mohanlal as a devoted admirer of the actor. Later they became close friends after being introduced by a mutual acquaintance. After their friendship developed into a relationship they decided to get married. Their horoscopes didn’t match well therefore neither family supported this alliance so it wasn’t an easy task for them. 

However they later realized that this was the result of an error made by the person who wrote their horoscopes. Following approval from both sets of parents Mohan Lal and Suchitra exchanged vows on April 28 of the year 1988. They were married in Mudavanmugal Mohanlal’s hometown. As of 2022 Suchitra and Mohanlal have been married for 34 years. The couple wed according to tradition and established themselves as an excellent example for youngsters to follow.

The couple has a son named Pranav Mohanlal and a daughter named Vismaya.  Pranav used to be thought of as a young artist. In the year 2018 he made his Mollywood debut as a lead actor. Vismaya the daughter of Mohanlal has only lately returned after studying overseas. She keeps penning stories and poetry and now she is gearing up to release her debut book.

Mohanlal’s Career

Mohanlal Movie- Nadodikattu (1987)

Sathyan Anthikad and Sreenivasan collaborated on the 1987 Indian Malayalam satirical comedy film Nadodikkattu which was based on a Siddique-Lal tale. Casino Productions a firm controlled by Century Kochumon Mohanlal I. V. Sasi and Mammootty produced the movie.

Peons at a government office Dasen and Vijayen wind up with no employment a cow and a sizable bank loan after a sequence of absurd occurrences. They make the desperate decision to travel to Dubai and try their luck there. However they find themselves in an unexpected place and are misidentified as smugglers which sets off a new round of adventures in their miserable existence. The societal issues plaguing Kerala in the 1980s such as the state’s pervasive unemployment and poverty were referenced in Nadodikkattu.

Along with cameo parts for Seema I. V. Sasi and M. G. Soman as themselves the movie also stars Shobhana Thilakan Innocent Mamukkoya Captain Raju Meena Kundara Johny Janardhanan Ajith Kollam and Sankaradi in supporting roles. The Mohanlal-Sreenivasan pairing was cemented as one of popular Malayalam cinema’s most enduring and bankable acting duos by critics who believe the movie exemplifies popular Malayalam cinema at its most sarcastic. Characters plot and script all have classic status.

Chithram (1988)

Priyadarshan wrote and directed the screwball comedy Chithram which came out in 1988. Mohanlal Ranjini Nedumudi Venu Lizy Poornam Viswanathan Sreenivasan M. G. Soman Sukumari Maniyanpilla Raju and Shanavas all appear in the movie which was made by P. K. R. Pillai under the banner of Shirdi Sai Creations. Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair also makes a brief cameo. Johnson wrote the film score and Kannur Rajan wrote the lyrics. For his work in this movie Mohanlal received the Kerala State Film Award – Special Jury Award.

Against the advice of her father Kalyani chooses to wed her partner. But when he finds out that she would be disinherited her boyfriend leaves her. Ramachandra Menon Kalyani’s father who lives in the US is uninformed of the broken engagement and travels to India for a vacation with his daughter and son-in-law who recently got married. As a result Kalyani’s caregiver Kaimail decides to cast a stranger named Vishnu in the role of her husband.

However Kalyani’s cousin Bhaskaran is aware that Vishnu is not her husband and makes an effort to convince Menon of the truth in order to acquire Menon’s fortune. In the meantime Vishnu and Kalyani continue to argue and fight. Later on though she grows fond of him and wishes she might wed him. But the plot takes a turn when Vishnu’s background is revealed with the presence of a mysterious stranger.

On December 23 1988 the Christmas holiday weekend Chithram was made public. At the time the movie had the greatest box office takings in Malayalam with 3.5 crores.

Kireedam (1989)

The action drama film Kireedam was released in 1989 in India and was written and directed by Sibi Malayil and A. K. Lohithadas. In addition to Mohanlal Thilakan and Parvathy Jayaram the movie also has Kaviyoor Ponnamma Mohan Raj Murali Sreenath Kundara Johny Cochin Haneefa Jagathy Sreekumar Philomina Usha and Jagadish in supporting parts. Maniyanpilla Raju Mamukkoya and Oduvil Unnikr Johnson wrote the score for the movie.

A sincere police officer wants his son to join the force as well but when he gets transferred things take a turn for the worse; his son starts getting into trouble with the local gangsters is later arrested and his father disowns him. It looks at how society stereotypes people and forces them to play that role whether they want to or not.

 The National Film Award – Special Mention went to Mohanlal. The Kerala Film Critics Award for Best Screenplay went to Lohithadas. The word Kireedam alludes to the figurative crown that the Ramapuram villagers give Sethumadhavan for killing Keerikadan Jose.

Kireedam was made public on July 7 1989. At the box office it was a huge commercial success. The performances of Mohanlal and Thilakan the screenplay and the soundtrack all won high accolades from critics. In Indian cinema it is recognised as a classic. In 1993 Chenkol the movie’s sequel was released. Kireedam was translated into six additional languages becoming Mohanlal’s first film to receive this treatment: Rowdyism Nasinchali in Telugu (1990) Modada Mareyalli in Kannada (1991) Gardish in Hindi (1993) Babar Adesh in Bengali Bangladesh (1995) Nayak-The Real Hero in Bengali (2005) and Kireedam in Tamil (2007).

Kilukkam (1991)

A 1991 Indian musical romance comedy film called Kilukkam was written by Venu Nagavalli and directed by Priyadarshan. Along with Thilakan Innocent K. B. Ganesh Kumar Sukumari and Sharat Saxena it also features cameos by Murali and Jagadish. S. P. Venkatesh composed the music. 

Kilukkam was made available on August 15 1991. The movie which played in theatres for more than 365 days was the highest-grossing Malayalam movie at the time. Mohanlal received the Best Actor award for Kilukkam while Jagathy Sreekumar took home the Second Best Actor prize N. Gopalakrishnan won the Best Editor award and S. Kumar won the Best Cinematographer award.

Joji is a down-on-his-luck tour guide in Ootacamund. A chain of incidents links the life of Joji and his buddy Nischal with that of Nandini a mentally disabled tourist. Hilarity breaks out in the movie’s opening scenes as they strive ineffectively to get rid of Nandini. They discover however that she is an escaped mental patient with a reward for her safe return. 

They make the decision to hide her for a while in order to collect the bounty once it has grown sufficiently after discovering that it has been rising for some time. They modify her appearance by cutting her lengthy tresses short. As more mysteries are revealed they eventually come to the realization that nothing is quite as it seems.

The movie is recognised as one of Malayalam cinema’s top comedies. The 1953 film Roman Holiday is said to have served as the inspiration for the film. Priyadarshan himself reworked it as Allari Pilla in Telugu and Muskurahat in Hindi. The movie later got a sequel called Kilukkam Kilukilukkam (2006).

Devasuram (1993)

I. V. Sasi and Ranjith’s 1993 Indian Malayalam action drama film Devaasuram was released. With Innocent V. K. Sreeraman Maniyanpilla Raju and Augustine serving as supporting actors it stars Mohanlal Revathi and Napoleon. M. G. Radhakrishnan wrote the songs for the movie and S. P. Venkatesh wrote the background music.

The Mangalasherry family’s heir Neelakandan wastes away his father’s wealth and is a dependable threat to society. One of his victims is promising dancer Bhanu who after being publicly insulted by Neelakandan and his pals promises never to dance again till he dies. They surprisingly fall in love. Meanwhile the ruthless Shekaran of a rival clan has vowed to exact revenge on Neelakandan’s men for killing his uncle. Ranjith based the fictional character Neelakandan on Mullasserry Rajagopal a real-life person (died 2002). 

Devaasuram was a critically acclaimed and financially lucrative film. It is regarded as a masterpiece and Mohanlal is credited with some of his best performances as Mangalassery Neelakandan. A sequel titled Ravanaprabhu (2001) which marked writer Ranjith’s first foray into directing followed. In the same year as Kunti Putrudu the movie was remade in Telugu.

Spadikam (1995)

Spadikam is a 1995 Indian action drama film in the Malayalam language that was written directed and produced by R. Mohan through Shogun Films. Rajendra Babu wrote the dialogue. Along with Urvashi Spadikam George K. P. A. C. Lalitha Rajan P. Dev Silk Smitha Nedumudi Venu Chippy and V. K. Sreeraman playing supporting parts the movie stars Mohanlal and Thilakan. The film’s background score and original songs were written by S. P. Venkatesh.

In a made-up tiny town Chacko Master doubles as both a maths instructor and the principal of the school. He is a rigorous educator who is not kind to his own son Thomas. Thomas moves out of the house because he is fed up with his father’s strictness. After 14 years Thomas returns to his hamlet as the proprietor of a stone quarry a felon and the subject of numerous pending legal proceedings. Thomas’ mother and younger sister are devastated by the father and son’s shared decision to never make amends.

Spadikam which earned more than 8 crores at the box office and received positive reviews from critics was the highest-grossing Malayalam movie of the year. At the Filmfare Awards South the film won Best Film – Malayalam Best Actor (Mohanlal) and Best Director awards. Mohanlal received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor. The movie was translated into Telugu Tamil and Kannada. Over time the movie developed a cult following. Over time the persona of Aadu Thomas rose to fame in popular culture.

Guru (1997)

Guru is a 1997 Indian fantasy drama film in the Malayalam language which was written by C. G. Rajendra Babu is based on a tale by Rajeev and directed by Rajiv Anchal. Suresh Gopi Madhupal Sithara Kaveri Sreelakshmi Nedumudi Venu and Sreenivasan play supporting roles and Nassar makes a brief cameo. Mohanlal plays a major role.

In a nearby Indian village the peace and harmony between two religious sects are disrupted by a riot that ambitious politicians have staged. Following the sad deaths of his family during the riot Raghuraman a local Hindu priest’s son pledges vengeance against the opposing community. Raghuraman enlists with an armed extremist organisation with the goal of eradicating them. When they arrive they discover that members of the opposing group have already sought refuge at a holy guru’s monastery where Raghuraman also succeeds in disguising himself and seeking safety. Raghuraman and his friends intend to bomb the monastery and murder the refugees thinking that their task will be simple. However things did not turn out to be as simple as they had imagined.

Ilaiyaraaja wrote the songs and the original musical composition. India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar category was chosen as Guru. Guru is the first Malayalam film submitted by India for the Oscars.

Thanmathra (2005)

Based on Padmarajan’s short story Orma Thanmathra is a 2005 Indian Malayalam-language drama film that Blessy wrote and directed. Ramesan Nair a Clerk at the Secretariat is blessed with a loving family that includes his wife Lekha and two kids Manu and Manju. 

Ramesan Nair’s loss of memory as a result of Alzheimer’s disease shatters the family’s joy. The film delves deeper into the several facets of Alzheimer’s. It deals with issues at a very deep level related to families including love and suffering and this transforms everyone’s lives for a fresh start.

At the box office the movie made three times its budget and ran for 150 days. Thanmathra received five Kerala State Film Awards including Best Film Best Actor Best Director and Best Screenplay. The actor Arjun Lal who made his acting debut also received a Special Mention Award. At the 53rd National Film Awards it also took home the prize for Best Feature Film in Malayalam.

Drishyam (2013)

Jeethu Joseph wrote and directed the 2013 Indian Malayalam crime thriller movie Drishyam. Ansiba Hassan Esther Anil Kalabhavan Shajohn Asha Sharath Siddique Roshan Basheer and Neeraj Madhav play supporting roles alongside Mohanlal and Meena. The film was shot by Sujith Vaassudev and Ayoob Khan edited it. Anil Johnson and Vinu Thomas composed the movie’s soundtrack.In a remote hill town in Kerala Georgekutty is the owner of a cable television network. Along with his wife and two daughters he has a contented existence. Between the events Georgekutty’s daughter Anju leaves on a field trip. After a few days she encounters a man who was also with her on the school trip. He uses a video of her that he recorded on the field trip to blackmail her. He is inadvertently killed by Rani and Anju over the course of events. When Georgekutty gets home he learns about the incidents and a cat-and-mouse game ensues because the dead man is the son of IG Geeta Prabhakar and Prabhakar. The rest of the narrative builds to a profoundly rewarding and surprising finale by showing how the family handles the crisis that arises during the murder inquiry.

Drishyam which had its theatrical debut on December 19 2013 in Kerala was well-received by critics who praised the script the actors’ performances and the direction. The first Malayalam movie to earn 50 crores at the box office was this one. The movie made over 75 crores in international box office revenue and was in theatres for more than 150 days. With a runtime of 125 days it also set a record for the longest film in the United Arab Emirates.

Drishyam screened at the 45th International Film Festival of India and the 8th Asian Film Festival. It received multiple honors including the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value and the Filmfare Award for Best Film – Malayalam.

It was translated into four additional Indian languages: Papanasam (2015) in Tamil Drishyam (2015) in Hindi and Drishya (2014) in Kannada. It was also reproduced in Chinese as Sheep Without a Shepherd (2019) and Sinhala as Dharmayuddhaya (2017) making it the first Indian movie to be remade in mainland China. Following Deewaar this is the second Indian film to be remade in three different languages. 

The Indonesian remake was confirmed in September 2021 making it the first Indian film to be remade in Indonesian. Additionally it will be the fourth Indian film to receive a seven-language remake. After Kireedam it was Mohanlal’s second movie to receive at least six different languages making him the first performer to accomplish this accomplishment twice. In 2021 Drishyam 2 became available.

Mohanlal’s Stage Career

Before beginning his career in cinema Mohanlal appeared in a number of amateur plays. He made his professional acting debut in 2001 as Karna in Kavalam Narayana Panicker’s Sanskrit-language production Karnabharam. On March 29 2001 as a part of the National Theatre Festival of the National School of Drama it had its world premiere at the Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi. Mohanlal performed ten iconic characters and scenarios from ten Malayalam books written over the course of a century in his show called Kadhayattam.

Prasanth Narayanan’s Chayamukhi written and directed by Mohanlal and Mukesh premiered in 2008. The Mahabharata characters Bheeman and Keechakan were represented by Mohanlal and Mukesh respectively. In the same year Shobana’s English ballet Maya Ravan included Mohanlal’s voice as Hanuman’s character.

Lalisom – The Lal Effect was a musical group that was founded in 2014 by Mohanlal and guitarist Ratheesh Vegha. The band eventually disbanded after playing their debut performance at the 2015 National Games of India.

Once more working with Mukesh in 2015 Mohanlal served as the narrator for the film Naga. Suveeran directed the play which was adapted from Nagamandala by Girish Karnad a Kannada play. On August 9 2015 it had its debut at Kalady’s St. George Church Parish Hall.

Mohanlal Escape Art Career

Mohanlal trained as an escape artist for 18 months in secret in 2008 under renowned magician Gopinath Muthukad. In Thiruvananthapuram he intended to pull out a prank dubbed Burning Illusion. 

However the performance was later cancelled after complaints and claims that it was exceedingly unsafe owing to pressure from a number of sources including his supporters.The actor chose to do a safe piece in 2014 for the opening ceremony of Magic Planet a complex with a magic theme in Kinfra Film and Video Park in Kazhakoottam Trivandrum. 

It was an initiative of the Academy of Magical Sciences which was started by his mentor the renowned magician Gopinath Muthukad. Oommen Chandy who was Kerala’s Chief Minister at the time officially opened the event. Mohanlal then performed the first magic trick. He raised a girl on air as part of the act.

Mohanlal’s Upcoming Projects

Barroz

One of Mohanlal’s eagerly anticipated projects is the upcoming action thriller written and directed by Jeethu Joseph. The movie is also one of Mohanlal’s most costly endeavours. For the first time the renowned actor Mohanlal will collaborate on the film L353 with a first-time filmmaker. As soon as Mohanlal finishes filming Jeethu Joseph’s Ram the movie is rumoured to begin production. The actor-director team of Mohanlal and Rajiv Nath will work together once more on their upcoming movie Onnam Sir following their collaboration on Pakal Nakshathrangal. Mohanlal will play a teacher in the movie adaptation of the well-known short novel Pothychoru by author Kapoor.

Alone directed by Shaji Kailas has been getting a lot of attention from Mohanlal fans. In the Vysakh-directed movie Monster Mohanlal will play Lucky Singh which is a new role. Additionally the superstar is starring in and directing the Malayalam drama Barroz. Project inspiration came from the novel Barroz: Guardian of D’ Gama’s Treasure. For the next Malayalam anthology Olavum Theeravum filmmaker Priyadarshan and actor Mohanlal have teamed up. In the P. Anil-directed action comedy Bharath Rathna he will also appear as the lead.

Mohanlal’s Controversies

Band controversy

Lalisom – The Lal Effect is a musical group that was founded in 2014 by Mohanlal and guitarist Ratheesh Vegha. The band received criticism on social media for lip-syncing after initially charging a fee of 1.63 crore.

 Following the criticism Mohanlal returned the money to the government but they refused claiming that their morality forbade them from doing so and that Mohanlal had not personally benefited from the money since it was intended to pay for the performers’ stage costs and compensation. Despite this Mohanlal chose not to retrieve the funds he sent.

Singing Controversy

When Mohanlal claimed to have performed the song Mathalathenunnan from the movie Uyarum Njaan Naadake he sparked a debate. Soon after VT Murali who actually sang the song criticised Mohanlal for claiming credit for it. Mohanlal apologised for any confusion and clarified that his only intention was to imply that the song was from his film and that he lip-synced it.

Obscene Gesture

A video of Mohanlal making an offensive gesture was trending online. The Mollywood celebrity is seen in the video admiring Shruti Haasan’s dance performance before reportedly making an offensive gesture. The actor received a lot of backlash as a result of the video’s widespread distribution on Facebook and YouTube. Both Mammootty and Siddique can be seen chuckling while Mohanlal does the action. After viewing the video on Facebook many people have been criticizing Mohanlal for acting in such a way in public. But the Mohanlal and Shruti Hassan video that has gone viral on social media has been edited. The clips are skillfully combined to give the impression that they occurred simultaneously while in reality they are all from separate incidents that occurred at various periods.

Mohanlal’s Net Worth

Mohanlal’s net worth in 2022 is $50 million US or 399 Crore Indian Rupees. His annual salary is $5 million as of 2022 according to a number of reports. He earns the majority of his money through his acting work songs endorsements and other brand-related activities. He charges between Rs. 10 and 15 crores for every film. Some of the cars owned by Mohanlal are Toyota Vellfire Toyota Land Cruiser Mercedes Benz GL350 and Lamborghini Urus.

Mohanlal has founded and collaborated on a number of businesses in the fields of packaged spices restaurants and film distribution among others. In the 1980s he shared ownership of the production business Casino with Mammootty I.V. Sasi Seema and Century Kochumon. The production company turned out pictures that were lucrative economically. Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments a business that distributes movies is owned by him. 

He founded Vismayas Max a Trivandrum-based pre- and post-production studio for movies as well as a college for dubbing actors at the city’s KINFRA Film and Video Park. Later Sohan Roy of the Aries Group now known as Aries Vismayas Max took over the company’s management. The company’s current brand ambassador is Mohanlal. He has worked as a producer for the company Pranavam Arts International.

Mohanlal owns eateries both in India and abroad including the 2002-founded Mohanlal’s Tastebuds chain in Dubai and the same-named Middle Eastern brand of spices pickles sauces and curry powder. The Eastern Group has owned the bulk of the trademark since 2007. He opened The Harbour Market a seafood restaurant in Bangalore and Travancore Court a hotel in Ernakulam both in 2006. Among his other business endeavours is Uniroyal Marine Exports Limited a seafood export business with its headquarters in Kozhikode where he has served as a non-executive director since 1992. 

He is a co-founder partner and chairman of the Jose Thomas Performing Arts Centre (JTPac) a performing arts and music centre founded in 2009 in Thrippunithura Kochi. He serves as a director wholly independent of Clenergen India Private Limited which manufactures and supplies biomass feedstock for biomass gasification.
