Meghna Gulzar is a screenwriter, director, and producer from India. She is best known for the 2018 Bollywood film Raazi. After making her screenwriting debut in 1999 with her father's film Hu Tu Tu, Meghna directed her first film Filhaal… (2002), though she did not find success during that decade.
She returned to directing after an eight-year hiatus with the critically acclaimed Talwar (2015), for which she was nominated for Best Director despite its poor box office performance. Her first profitable directorial venture came in 2018 with the patriotic thriller Raazi, which became one of the highest-grossing films in India. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Director for her work in the film.
Meghna Gulzar will turn 50 in 2023. Gulzar was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra on December 13, 1973. Her star sign is Sagittarius.
In an interview, Meghna said, “I have a close relationship with my parents. I think I had a typical childhood. Whatever role they played in their public and professional lives, at home they were always my father and mother. If there is anything I admire, it is that they raised me separately and together.”
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, she worked as an assistant director for renowned filmmaker Syed Akhtar Mirza. In 1995, she completed a short filmmaking program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Meghna is the daughter of lyricist and poet Gulzar and former actress Rakhi. Her mother named her Meghna after the Meghna River in what is now Bangladesh.
She is married to Govind Sandhu, co-founder and CFO of Antworks Pte. Ltd. Samay is their son born from their marriage. The couple got married on January 9, 2000 in a simple yet elegant ceremony at the bungalow of Meghna's father Gulzar.
Meghna started her career as a freelance writer for The Times of India and NFDC magazine Indian Cinema. Her poems were published in anthologies edited by the Indian Poetry Society. After graduating with a degree in Sociology, Meghna Gulzar worked as an assistant director to renowned director Syed Akhtar Mirza. In 1995, she attended a short filmmaking course at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
Sushmita Sen, a former Miss Universe turned actress, starred with Tabu in Meghna's debut film Filhaal, which was released in 2002. Her second film, Newly Married, was released in 2007. She also directed the short film Pooranmasi, starring Amrita Singh, from Sanjay Gupta's anthology Dus Kahaniyaan. Meghna received two Best Director nominations, with Talvar and Raazi winning the Filmfare Award for Best Film. Meghna also won the Best Director award for Raazi, which also helped the film win the Best Film award.
Filhaal… is a 2002 Bollywood film directed by Meghna Gulzar (her directorial debut). It stars Sushmita Sen Tabu, Sanjay Suri and Palash Sen. Meghna Gulzar, daughter of lyricist Gulzar and actress Raakhee, made her directorial debut with this film.
The film was widely praised, especially for Sushmita Sen's performance, for which she was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Anu Malik composed the music and background score. Anja Biswas composed the background score. Gulzar wrote all the lyrics.

Talvar, also known as Guilty in the United States, is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language thriller drama film directed by Meghna Gulzar and written by Vishal Bhardwaj. The film is based on the 2008 Noida double murder case involving a teenage girl and her family's servant, and was produced by Bhardwaj and Vineet Jain.
Starring Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma and Neeraj Kabi, the film tells the investigation of a murder case from three different perspectives: the police investigation, the first Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation and the investigation by another CBI team.
Talvar premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival in the Special Presentations section and screened at the 2015 BFI London Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival. The film was released in Indian cinemas on October 2, 2015 to mostly positive reviews, with particular praise for its script and performances; however, many critics felt that the film was heavily skewed towards parents.

Raazi is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language spy action-thriller film directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Vineet Jain, Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar and Apoorva Mehta of Junglee Pictures and Dharma Productions. The film stars Alia Bhatt in the lead role and was written by Vicky Kaushal, Rajit Kapur, Shishir Sharma and Jaideep Ahlawat.
The film, based on Harinder Sikhar's 2008 novel Calling Sehmat, tells the true story of an Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent who marries into a Pakistani officer family and passes information to India ahead of the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. Principal photography on Raazi began in July 2017 in Mumbai and was completed on October 27, 2017. Raazi premiered on May 11, 2018. Made on a budget of 350 million rupees ($4.4 million), Raazi grossed 196 million rupees ($25 million) worldwide, becoming one of India's highest-grossing films with a female lead. The film also received critical acclaim, with Meghna's direction and Bhatt's performance receiving rave reviews.
Raazi received 15 nominations at the 64th Film Awards and won five awards (tied with Andhadhun), including Best Film, Best Director (Gulzar) and Best Actress (Bhatt).
Chhapaka is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language biographical drama film based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film stars Deepika Padukone in the title role, a character inspired by Agarwal, and also stars Vikrant Massey and Madhurjeet Sarghi. It is Padukone's production debut and her return to acting two years after Padmaavat (2018). Fox Star Studios, Ka Productions, Avernus Productions, and Mriga Films have contributed to the project.
The film was shot in and around New Delhi and Mumbai between March and June 2019. The film will be released in theatres worldwide on January 10, 2020 and has been tax-free in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Despite the film's commercial failure, Padukone's portrayal of an acid attack survivor was widely praised.

The makers of Meghna Gulzar's upcoming film Sam Bahadur announced on Thursday that the film will hit theatres on December 1, 2023. RSVP Movies has produced the film, which stars Vicky Kaushal as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. Writer Rakesh Bharti claimed that he wrote Lakshmi's story and Meghna adapted it for the film. The news quickly went viral, prompting the director to file an affidavit in response to the writer's claims. In the report, Meghna said that Rakesh's lawsuit is completely false, baseless, legally untenable and without any basis. According to the statement, there can be no copyright case as the information is not in the public domain.
