Martin James Guptill is a New Zealand cricketer who plays internationally as the first batsman in limited-overs matches. Guptill currently holds the record for the highest individual score in a Cricket World Cup match and is second in One-Day Internationals with 237 runs.

Domestic business
Guptill plays domestic cricket for Auckland and club cricket for New Lynn Suburbs. He scored four runs and 99 runs in the first and second innings of a first-class cricket match in March 2006. Guptill played for Derbyshire Cricket Club in the second half of the 2011 English county cricket season.
T20 Career
He was selected to play for Edinburgh Rocks in the inaugural European T20 Grand Slam cricket tournament in July 2019. However, the tournament was cancelled the following month. Ahead of the 2020 IPL auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad released him.

ODI debut career
Guptill made his debut for New Zealand at the 2006 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut for New Zealand on 10 January 2009 against the West Indies in Auckland. He is the first New Zealander to score a century on his ODI debut, and his 122 is the second highest debut score in ODI history. He is also the first New Zealander to bat for the entire match. In the first Test match in March 2009 in Hamilton against India, he scored scores of 14 and 48. The International Cricket Council named him in the World ODI XI in recognition of his performances in 2009.
During New Zealand’s tour of England in 2013, Guptill scored two consecutive unbeaten matches at home and in Southampton, totalling 189 runs, contributing to New Zealand’s best ODI score at the time (359 runs), the fifth-highest team total in ODI history at the time.
In the quarter-final at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington, Guptill broke his previous World Cup record with an unbeaten 237 off 163 balls against the West Indies. New Zealand’s score of 393 was the highest score in a World Cup knockout match, and he became the first player to hit a double hundred in a knockout stage match. He kept three clean sheets in the group stage and finished as the top scorer with 547 runs.
He was one of 20 players who were awarded new contracts by New Zealand Cricket for the 2018–19 season in May 2018. In April 2019, he was selected in New Zealand’s 2019 Cricket World Cup squad. Guptill was selected in the New Zealand squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in August 2021.
On 3 November 2021, during the T20 World Cup match against Scotland in New Zealand, Guptill became the second batsman to score 3,000 runs in T20I cricket. After being left out of the Indian squad for the T20 series, Guptill was released from his national contract, marking the end of the experienced batsman’s international career. Battle of controversy
The match was bound to end in the final over as MS Dhoni was solid in the batting line. A brilliant direct hit by Martin Guptill ended MS Dhoni’s tenure in the batting line, hitting 50 and crushing Indian hopes when 25 runs were required from 10 balls.
Guptill recalled his brilliant delivery and said that any other delivery other than a straight one would not have worked while pointing out how close Dhoni was to the boundary at that time.
