Marcus Stoinis Cricket

Marcus Stoinis is an Australian all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls medium-pace. He is a medium-pace bowler by profession. The Australian team that played in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia included Steven Smith, Phil Hughes, James Pattinson, Josh Hazlewood and James Faulkner. Stoinis was a member of that team.

In January 2009, Stoinis made his debut for Western Australia at the age of 19. Unable to become a regular member of the starting XI, he decided to move to Victoria for the 2012–13 season.

On the advice of former teammate Theo Doropoulos, he decided to play for Northcote Cricket Club in the Victorian Premier League. Stoinis enjoyed incredible success at Northcote, but things soon began to change.

In the 2013-14 season, he scored four epic centuries at an average of 100. Given Stoinis’ form at the time, his selection for the Victorian squad seemed a foregone conclusion and he was selected for the Victorian Sheffield Shield squad soon after. He did not disappoint the Victorian selection committee when he cemented his status as Victoria’s top player with a brilliant 170 against Tasmania.

He led Victoria in runs scored in the 2014-15 Sheffield Shield. In the summer, he made 785 appearances, scoring at 49.06 runs per over. He also travelled to India with Australia A in July 2015. Stoinis scored 77 runs, 2 for 18, in the first four-day match against India A in August-September 2015, earning his place in the national team’s ODIs and the only T20I against England. He has developed as a batsman over time, and his bowling has been useful. In the 2018-19 BBL, he played as the number one batsman for Melbourne Stars and has been in hot form recently.

Marcus Stoinis’ IPL career

Play

A true all-rounder is one of those talents that is not easy to come by in the Indian Premier League. Marcus Stoinis is one of those few cricketers who can play at any position in the batting order, bowl effectively both in the early and late stages of a T20 innings and is strong in defence. These traits prompted the Royal Challengers to make a deal with Kings XI Punjab ahead of the 2019 Indian Premier League. Stoinis is a strong and athletic man, and although he is a late bloomer by international standards, he has the ability to clear any obstacle with his ferocious batting style.

In 2015, Delhi Dadevilles signed him but he didn’t fit into the team’s plans and hence Kings XI Punjab bought him in the subsequent auction. Despite his improving international record, the Mohali-based team failed to benefit from any stellar performances. Although the transfer cost them Rs 6.2 crore, they availed themselves of the match card rights and nabbed him from RCB in the 2018 IPL auction as he had a bright future ahead of him. However, a lackluster performance in the second season gave KXIP a reason to sell their prized asset and when RCB came calling again in 2019, they were happy to swap him for homegrown player Mandeep Singh.
