Biography

Vivian Wilson Fernandes better known as Divine is an Indian rapper from Mumbai Maharashtra. Divine was born on the 2nd of October 1990. Divine’s age is 32 years as of 2022. Divine’s zodiac sign is Libra. After the release of his song Yeh Mera Bombay he began to gain popularity in 2013. He made a name for himself with the release of his song Mere Gully Mein 2019 which featured fellow Mumbai rapper Naezy. 

DIVINE once noticed a classmate wearing a 50 Cent t-shirt. He’d never heard of the rapper before so he asked his friend who was on the t-shirt and what the story was. His friend informed him that it is hip-hop and offered to make him a rap CD. The album included songs by 50 Cent Eminem Tupac Shakur Big L and others. DIVINE initially struggled to understand the lyrics due to the slang and speed. However he looked it up online and began to learn more about hip-hop as he listened to the CD day and night.

Family

Divine comes from a Christian family. When his father died his mother relocated to Qatar. Anthony Fernandes his brother was forced to live with her in Qatar. As a result Divine had to live alone and be content with his life.

Education

Divine finished his education at St. John the Evangelist High School in Marol Andheri Mumbai. He then transferred to RD National College in Mumbai. However he was unable to complete his education.

Vivian Divine is not married. Vivian Divine’s girlfriend and relationship are not known.

Career

DIVINE began writing music after his mother gave him a microphone and a computer at home. Initially he would only write in English recording his thoughts on daily experiences. At first he thought his writing and rapping were poor. But as he continued to write every day he improved. He also wrote three gospel rap songs which inspired him to adopt the moniker DIVINE.

DIVINE a member of Mumbai’s Finest rap crew would only write and rap in English because he believed it was the only language in which hip-hop could work. However once he left the crew and began exploring as a solo rapper he discovered that the majority of the people around him spoke Hindi and couldn’t understand his English rap. He established himself as the rapper DIVINE and began writing in Hindi about his hometown. ‘Yeh Mera Bombay’ was his first single and the first word he wrote was ‘gully.’

After DIVINE’s 2016 single ‘Jungli Sher ‘ electronic music producer Nucleya contacted him to collaborate on a song. ‘Jungle Raja’ was from Nucleya’s album Bass Rani. DIVINE wrote the lyrics to the song in less than a day and began touring with Nucleya to perform it. DIVINE had never performed in front of a crowd of 10 000 to 15 000 people before. He recognised the importance of stage presence and realised that live performances would allow him to grow his fan base. But he knew that having just one performer on stage wouldn’t work so he formed his band Gully Gang.

One of the most well-known Rap songs on the Internet is Kaam 25’s ‘Divine.’ The ‘Sacred Games’ Netflix original series premiered the song in 2018. It was specifically created for the Sacred Games and was written and sung by Divine.

Naezy’s song ‘Mere Gully Mein’ One of the most well-liked Rap artists on the Internet is Naezy. It was published on April 16 2015 under the Sony Music India label in collaboration with Naezy. On the second track from ‘Gunehgar ‘ producer Karan Kanchan unexpectedly uses Alka Yagnik’s excellent vocals to sample ‘Baazigar o baazigar.’

And just like they did with Satya they turn yet another classic Bollywood song into a rap hit. The ‘Billie Eilish’ hitmaker Armani White joins the song and unsurprisingly drops a chic verse. 

His smooth vocal delivery is a delightful counterpoint to DIVINE’s rough and aggressive vocals.

Struggles

Gully Gang’s headquarters is DIVINE House. DIVINE’s JB Nagar home has been the epicentre of his rap career. He wrote the majority of his songs including his biggest hits ‘Jungli Sher’ and ‘Mere Gully Mein ‘ in the same house. 

When he collaborated with Naezy on ‘Mere Gully Mein ‘ the two met in DIVINE’s living room and wrote the song’s lyrics. The house became the headquarters for one of India’s biggest hip-hop bands after Gully Gang was formed. DIVINE has always lived in the same house and will continue to do so because he wants to be close to the friends who helped him at the beginning of his career.

Divine has defined his success as being reunited with his mother. When Divine was younger his mother worked abroad. He was raised by his grandmother who introduced him to music when he was a child. Every year he would only see his mother for a few months. 

DIVINE defined success as being able to bring his mother back home to live in India rather than having to work hard in a foreign land when he became a rapper. After 13 years he was able to fulfill his dream and bring her back to India. She saw him perform live for the first time after returning permanently when he was on stage with Nucleya.

Controversy

Divine and Emiway Bantai Diss Track Controversy Explained

• It’s simpler to earn views on YouTube than it is to earn streams on services like Spotify Gaana etc. Divine teased Emiway by saying.
• Emiway appeared on-air and stated that since YouTube is where all rappers got their start Divine should stop uploading his music there if he doesn’t need it. ‘Aap macha ke dikhao’ if YouTube par koi bhi macha sakta hai.
• Emiway released a song titled ‘HARD ‘ which was a subtle diss rather than a direct one.
• Then Divine dropped ‘Chabi wala Bandar ‘ a direct diss track but Emiway didn’t respond. After a few days Divine released ‘Sach Bol Patta ‘ another direct diss track making two in a row.
• In response to both of his diss tracks Emiway released his final diss track ‘Gully Ka Kutta.’
• Emiway and Divine reconciled and ended their feud. Divine believed Emiway used ‘Merry Christmas’ in the first track ‘HARD’ because Divine is Christian.
• Then Emiway called Divine and explained that it wasn’t for him but for another rapper named Krsna (‘Merry Krsms’). Also Divine is 29 years old while Krsna is 34 and the hook of ‘HARD’ (Kisi ki age hai 30+) was a subtle dig at Krsna rather than Divine.
• Everyone knew this but according to Divine it was the reason Divine dissed Emiway which is not at all convincing. But it’s fine because everything was resolved.

Interesting Facts

• Divine’s first English rap ‘Voice of the Streets ‘ was released on YouTube. Unfortunately it was not a success and Divine decided to return to Hindi and release a rap titled ‘Ye Mera Bombay.’ This song was a huge success earning him accolades and awards.
• Divine is very vocal about his opinions and says he doesn’t relate to other rappers like Honey Singh and Badshah because all of their songs are about girls alcohol and cars and it’s not real hip hop which he will never do.
• Divine was not a privileged child. His life had been a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs. He lived in the Andheri slum and witnessed the construction of an international airport nearby. He felt that the rich were getting richer while the poor were getting poorer. So he decided to be the poor’s voice and wrote the song ‘Mere Gully Mein ‘ which brought him enormous popularity.
• Following the release of Mere Gully Mein in 2016 he was invited to appear on BBC Asia Network’s Fire In The Booth segment which features upcoming rappers from the United Kingdom and other countries. DIVINE was the first person born and raised in India to appear on the segment which was hosted by Tommy Sandhu and featured renowned hip-hop DJ Charlie Sloth as a guest.
• Divine said he first became aware of the UK hip-hop scene while watching Charlie Sloth host the BBC One’s Xtra Rap Show. Charlie Sloth would bring up-and-coming rappers onto his show to freestyle to his beats. DIVINE had the opportunity to perform a freestyle for Charlie Sloth in Fire In The Booth.
• Divine was raised in the chawls of J. B Nagar in Andheri Mumbai by a lower-middle-class orthodox Christian family.
• He grew up in a dysfunctional family after his abusive father abandoned the family and his mother relocated to Qatar to support her family leaving him and his elder brother at their grandmother’s house.
• From the age of 14 he began to lead a lonely existence because his elder brother had also travelled to Qatar to help his mother.
• Divine’s life took a new turn when he noticed a man wearing a t-shirt with a picture of ’50 Cent’ embossed on it. In addition his friend got him a CD with songs by Eminem and 50 Cent. Following that he would listen to the tunes on his way home from school which sparked his interest in rap music.
• He began writing rap songs when he was in the eleventh grade. He used to compose for more than 5 hours to create a flawless verse back then.
• He used to follow his mother to a church in Marol throughout his school days where he practised rap music in divinity and peace. He began referring to himself as “Divine” from that point forward.
• He used to rap in English at first but quickly realised that he should embrace Hindi the language that comes so effortlessly to him.
• He joined a hip-hop group called ‘Mumbai’s Finest’ in college where he studied rapping from a rapper named Ace.
• His mother gave him a computer and a microphone when he graduated from college.
• He shot his debut video for “Coming For You” with a Nokia N8 phone.
