Ngidi played rugby for his first three years at Hilton, but he later resigned to focus on cricket. Former Zimbabwe all-rounder Neil Johnson was Ngidi’s coach at Hilton. After graduating from Hilton, Ngidi enrolled in the Bachelor of Social Sciences in Industrial Sociology course at the University of Pretoria.

In January 2017, Lungi Ngidi was a member of the South Africa T20 International (T20I) team for the series against Sri Lanka. Ngidi was in the Northern Cricket Team for the 2015 Africa T20 Cup. In July, he was named Player of the Year for the 2016 Africa T20 Cup by Cricket South Africa.
