In January 2017, Lungi Ngidi was a member of the South Africa T20 International (T20I) team for the series against Sri Lanka. On 20 January 2017, he played for South Africa in the first T20I against Sri Lanka and became the match-winner. Ngidi was selected for the One-Day International (ODI) match against Sri Lanka in the South Africa T20I series. However, he was unable to play in the ODI series due to an abdominal injury. Ngidi joined the South Africa Test team in January 2018 in preparation for the second Test match against India. On 13 January 2018, he played for South Africa in the first Test match against India.

In the match, he took figures of 7/87, including 6/39 in the second innings, as South Africa won by 135 runs. He was selected in South Africa’s One-Day International (ODI) squad for the series against India later that month. He made his ODI debut against India on 7 February 2018. Ngidi signed a national contract with Cricket South Africa in March 2018 for the upcoming 2018–19 season.

In April 2019, he was selected for the South African team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Ngidi’s first five-wicket haul in One-Day International cricket came in the second One-Day International against Australia on 4 March 2020. In the same match, he took 50 wickets for South Africa, becoming the fastest bowler in the team.

Ngidi was selected in the South African squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in September 2021. Ngidi took five wickets in his first Twenty20 International cricket match against England in the first match of the series in July 2022.

Ngidi was in the Northern Cricket Team for the 2015 Africa T20 Cup. In July, he was named Player of the Year for the 2016 Africa T20 Cup by Cricket South Africa. In August 2017, he was included in Benoni Zalmi’s squad for the inaugural T20 Global League. However, Cricket South Africa postponed the tournament to November 2018 in October 2017 and subsequently cancelled it. In January 2018, Ngidi was bought by Chennai Super Kings at the 2018 IPL auction.

In October 2018, he was selected in the Tshwane Spartans squad for the first Mzansi Premier League T20 tournament. He was one of eight players to watch picked by the International Cricket Council in March of that year. In September 2019, Ngidi was selected in the Tshwane Spartans squad in preparation for the Mzansi Premier League.
