Kunal Kamra’s Stand-Up Specials and OTT Career

One Mic Stand

Dr. Shashi Tharoor is a politician author and diplomat with a gift for language. Sadly so does his mentor the hysterically disruptive Mr. Kunal Kamra. The biggest actors politicians musicians and influencers in India receive stand-up comedy training from renowned comics. I’m still feeling the effects from a line from One Mic Stand’s first season. Shashi Tharoor everyone’s Merriam-Webster nudge was perplexed (not confused dear reader) by millennial lingo ‘Say if a millennial finds somebody attractive they say she’s a snacc.’ Snacc?’ ‘I mean since when was it a compliment to say to somebody — you look like a Sabudana Vada?’ Tharoor clinches his hands gesticulating ‘Why?’

His comedy mentor Kunal Kamra and the show’s host and creator Sapan Verma both appear pleased with the applause. Pleased not only because the set works but also because the format — of getting a high-profile celebrity such as Tharoor an actor musician or politician to perform a roughly 10-minute stand-up set for the first time — works. It can go horribly wrong — and it has both this and the previous season — but the stakes are admirable. Getting people to appreciate stand-up as an art form rather than just a performance. That it is not just people telling jokes but carefully crafted moments.

Kunal Kamra’s Struggles

Play

Kunal Kamra posted a screenshot of a conversation he had with his landlady who asked him to leave because of various ‘political issues’ that were brewing. Stand-up comedy can be dangerous especially when discussing politics. Not everyone appreciates a good joke and many people are offended when a comedian makes fun of their favourite political party or politician. One such comedian is Kunal Kamra. Kamra rose to prominence after clips from his stand-up routine about nationalism patriotism and demonetization went viral.

He made fun of the Prime Minister and his policies while highlighting how politicians take advantage of the Army to further their own objectives. One of Kamra’s catchphrases ‘Siachen mein hamare jawaan lad rahe hai ‘ went viral online and received over 2.8 million views on YouTube. But as we all know India sometimes doesn’t take jokes well. Now the comedian has reportedly been asked to leave his home because of his involvement in political issues according to Kunal Kamra’s Facebook post. A screenshot of Kamra’s conversation with his landlady in which she requests that he vacate the premises due to various ‘political issues coming up’ was posted online

According to Kunal Kamra Having a political opinion as a comedian comes at a cost. Maybe you’re wondering ‘What’s the big deal about making fun of people in power?’ However there are consequences. Two days before your show a corporation will call and say ‘Sorry we’ll have to cancel this one because our CEO is a big fan of the PM and we don’t want any political jokes.’ You object because you asked them the same question 40 days ago but they respond ‘He just joined last week but let us work together on something soon.’

Or you’ve been invited to a news conclave and a member of a political party decides to show up at the last minute. You get a call saying ‘We don’t want to take a risk because our guests are extremely powerful people whom we cannot offend so we are cancelling the comedy session entirely.’ The following day you see a photo of another comedian performing there with the caption ‘What an honour it was to perform at ‘. Because of your political beliefs your landlady may one day ask you to leave her home and look for another. And while all of this is going on and you’re feeling particularly suicidal HDFC will send you a message asking if you’ve linked your Aadhar Card. Choose widely the type of comedian you want to be.

It should be noted that Kamra is facing a contempt of court case in the Supreme Court for tweets criticising the Supreme Court for granting bail to Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami.

Attorney General KK Venugopal granted permission to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Kunal Kamra on November 12 2021 based on complaints from various law students and lawyers who had drawn the law officer’s attention to four tweets by Kamra. A private individual may file a contempt of court petition in the Supreme Court only with the consent of the Attorney General or the Solicitor General according to the Contempt of Courts Act (1971). When filing a contempt petition before a High Court a similar consent must be obtained from the concerned Advocate General of the State.
