Northern Ireland-born English actor and film director, Kenneth Charles Branagh has an estimated net worth of $55 million.
Perhaps the most famous Shakespeare interpreter of the late 20th century, Kenneth Branagh began his career in a golden haze of critical enthusiasm. First a star student at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (one of Britain’s most prestigious drama schools), then a promising newcomer to the London stage, then hailed as “the next Olivier” for his screen adaptation of Henry V in 1989, Branagh could do no wrong for a long time. Unfortunately, a series of misfortunes catalyzed by his disastrous Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in 1994 began to tarnish the halo hovering above the actor/director’s head. His lavish, four-hour Hamlet in 1996, however, further cemented his status as a man who knew his Bard, and helped to mitigate some of the disappointments that came before and after.
Although his accent might suggest otherwise, Branagh is originally from Northern Ireland, not England. Born to a working-class family in Belfast on December 10, 1960, he was raised in a conflict-torn part of the country until the age of nine. Leaving Belfast to escape the Troubles, his family relocated to Reading, England, where Branagh spent the rest of his childhood and adolescence. By turns bookish and athletic – and adopting an English accent at school while remaining Irish at home – Branagh became interested in acting at age 15, when he saw Derek Jacobi perform Hamlet (the two later worked together several times in both film and stage). Immersing himself in all things theatrical, Branagh was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London at age 18.
He is best known for directing and acting in several film adaptations of William Shakespeare’s plays, but he has also directed and acted in numerous other films and television series. On 10 July 2009, Branagh was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at RomaFictionFest.
