While studying at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, she got the opportunity to sing a song in the Bengali film Shriman Prithviraj in 1971 with Lata Mangeshkar, sponsored by music composer and singer Hemant Kumar. Although young Sarada aspired to work in the Indian Foreign Service, she moved to Mumbai at the age of 14 to try her luck as a dubbing singer in the Hindi film industry. She is an alumnus of St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, where she completed a bachelor’s degree in economics. She was very active in the St. Xavier music group. At the college’s annual Malhar festival, she met Ranu Mukherjee, daughter of Hemant Kumar. Ranu took the initiative to reintroduce Kavita to her father, who started asking her to sing in live performances. During one of the performances, she was spotted by dubbing singer Manna Dey, who hired her to sing for an advertisement.
