American actor and singer Jim Nabors has a net worth of $15 million. He was born James Thurston Nabors on June 12, 1930, in Sylacauga, AL. The tall, spade-jawed, extremely affable balladeer/actor was born to Mavis and Fred Nabors, where he sang for his high school and church. He attended the University of Alabama, where he began acting in plays. He became a member of Delta Tau Delta International Fraternity.
After graduation, Nabors moved to New York and worked as a typing clerk for the United Nations. A year later, he moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee. He got his first job in the TV industry as a film cutter. He then moved to Los Angeles due to asthma. He worked as a film cutter for NBC. He also worked as a singer and actor in a cabaret theater at the Santa Monica tavern, The Horn. His act characterized him as a character similar to the character of Gomer Pyle, which he later played: he sang in baritone and sometimes spoke in his high-pitched comical voice. While at the club, comedian Bill Dana saw his act. He invited him to appear on The Steve Allen Show. He was signed to the show and appeared several times but it was later canceled.
Jim Nabors’ silly singing “Down Home” gimmick caught the attention of TV star Andy Griffith. He offered him the role of the dimwitted but lovable gas station attendant “Gomer Pyle” in his popular 60s sitcom. His success skyrocketed until his character spawned his own series. Gomer Pyle: USMC (1964) became a solid hit and it ran for five seasons and made Jim a solid household name.
Jim became a frequent singing/comedy guest star on all the top primetime and late night shows on TV such as Sonny & Cher, The Tonight Show, The Dean Martin Show, The David Frost Show and The Joey Bishop Show. He was the annual “good luck charm” opening guest on close friend Carol Burnett’s TV variety series. CBS gave him the job and in 1969, he got his own TV variety series The Jim Nabors Hour which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. After a decade, he returned to the format hosting The Jim Nabors Show (1978). It may have been short-lived but it earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination.
Good friend Burt Reynolds was responsible for his theater debut as Harold Hill in The Music Man at Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre, with Florence Henderson as his Marion the librarian. Nabors also appeared in Reynolds’ films The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) and Stroker Ace (1983). His appearances in the early 90s were limited due to health problems. He preferred his quiet life in Hawaii. On January 15, 2013, at age 82, he made “coming out” news when he married his life partner Stan Cadwalader, a firefighter from Honolulu, in Seattle, when Washington became a “same-sex” marriage state.
