Irrfan Khan’s Biography

Irrfan Khan was an Indian actor who primarily appeared in Hindi cinema but also in British and Hollywood films. Khan has won several honours including a National Film Award and two Filmfare Awards. With his diverse and genuine performance Irrfan established himself as one of the finest performers in Indian cinema over a nearly thirty-year career. He received the Padma Shri India’s fourth highest civilian honour in 2011.

Khan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018. He went to London for treatment. He died on April 29 2020 at the age of 54 from a colon infection.

Irrfan Khan’s Age

Khan was born on January 7 1967 in Tonk Rajasthan to a Pathani Muslim family. He was aged 53 years old at the time of his death. His zodiac sign is Capricorn. He died on 29 April 2020 due to a colon infection.

Irrfan Khan’s Childhood

He was born in Tonk and raised in Jaipur. Irrfan excelled in cricket and was chosen to compete in the CK Nayudu Trophy for emerging players under 23 a tournament seen as a stepping stone to first-class cricket in India. He did not however go since he could not afford the travel expenses.

Khan was introduced to notable theatre artists in Jaipur where he performed on various stages. Khan got his MA in Jaipur before enrolling in the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi to learn acting in 1984.

Saeeda Begum Khan Khan’s mother was from Tonk while his father Yaseen Ali Khan was from Khajuriya village in Rajasthan’s Tonk region where they owned a tyre company. Khan married writer and fellow NSD graduate Sutapa Sikdar on February 23 1995. Babil and Ayan are their two sons.

Irrfan changed his plans and moved to New Delhi to study at the National School of Drama (NSD). Irrfan and Sutapa had firmly established their roots in the entertainment field by 1995 when they decided to take their relationship to the next level.

In his early days in Mumbai he worked as an air conditioner repairman and paid a visit to the home of his acting idol Rajesh Khanna in 1984. Irfan later claimed in an interview Nobody has ever experienced the kind of mania that Rajesh Khanna experienced.

The Lunchbox grossed 71 million in its first weekend and 110 million in its first week in India. Over the next few weeks the film continued to make large amounts grossing over $200 million in the first three weeks and another estimated 40-50 lakhs on its fourth weekend.

Nimrat Kaur (Ila) and her onscreen husband Nakul Vaid (Rajeev) stayed at the same house as shown in the film for weeks and spent days extensively rehearsing and adjusting to their part before the other cast members were even finalized in order to bring authenticity to the role and to know each other well enough to share the love and resentment among the couple as per the story in the film.

Paan Singh Tomar

In Paan Singh Tomar a biopic of the national steeplechase champion who becomes a dacoit owing to circumstances Irrfan Khan is a revelation. Irrfan gave one of his best performances in the complicated role based on the biography of the namesake athlete. Both audiences and reviewers praised his performance for which he also received a National Film Award.

Paan Singh Tomar earned $65.0 million (US$810 000) in the first week. In week two the film grossed 35.0 million (US$440 000) nett. Box Office India declared the film a semi-hit when it earned $30 million (US$380 000) in its third week. Manoj Bajpayee wanted the starring part but Tigmanshu declined to owe to financial constraints. The film was not released in theatres in British Columbia Canada. Paan Singh Tomar won the national steeplechase seven times in the 1950s and 1960s.

Maqbool

Irrfan Khan’s performance in Maqbool convinces you that he was born to play complex characters. The film is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth with Irrfan Khan playing the main character. As Maqbool the actor nails the character of a man overtaken by greed then by guilt.

The film premiered in North America at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival. Though the film did not draw a large audience in India during its theatrical run critics praised it and Pankaj Kapur went on to win a Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Critics) and a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival in the Marché du Film section.

The Namesake

Irrfan Khan appeared in Mira Nair’s film alongside his Maqbool co-star Tabu. However Ashima and Ashoke Ganguli of The Namesake live in an entirely different universe than Maqbool and Nimmi. Based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s book Irrfan and Tabu depict the struggles and tribulations of first-generation West Bengal immigrants who travel to the United States in search of a brighter future as well as their bond with their American-born children.

Initially Rani Mukerji was chosen for the starring part but due to schedule difficulties Tabu took the role. John Cho recommended Kal Penn for the role which was heavily desired by Nair’s son who was a fan of Penn in Harold and Kumar.

Mira Nair originally intended Abhishek Bachchan to play Gogol but changed her mind because she wanted someone who looked like he was raised in the United States so she selected Kal Penn because he was eager to do the job and also because Mira Nair’s son wanted Kal Penn to take the role.

Talvar

Based on the true story of teenage Aarushi Talwar’s death the film stars Irrfan Khan as Ashwin Kumar who is investigating the death of a girl and her domestic worker. The ease with which Irrfan Khan emotes the most complicated emotions makes this film a must-see.

Talvar made 226 million (US$2.8 million) in its first ten days and 302 million (US$3.8 million) by the end of its theatrical run. In the film Irrfan Khan and Tabu have a failing marriage and in one scene Irrfan Khan mentions the film Ijaazat which has a similar scenario to Irrfan and Tabu in this film. Ijaazat (1987) was directed by Gulzar Meghna Gulzar’s father and is clearly a tribute to him.

The film’s title is Talvar which translates to Sword in Hindi/Urdu. The plot appears to be based on the real-life murder of Arushi Talwar (who Shares the same title). However in the film the victim’s surname was Tandon and there was no character named Talvar. Talvar is referred to as the sword of the deity of justice in this verse.

Life In A… Metro

The story with Sharman Joshi Kangana Ranaut and Kay Kay Menon is one of four short stories inspired by Billy Wilder’s film The Apartment (1960). Kay Kay Menon plays the boss who spends time with Kangana Ranaut at Sharman Joshi’s residence. Sharman Joshi plays the part of Jack Lemmon Kay Kay Menon plays Fred MacMurray and Kangana Ranaut plays Shirley Maclaine.

Qissa

The film follows the decisions and actions of a man who is preoccupied with having a son to carry on the family legacy. Irrfan Khan plays Umber Singh a man who is far from pleasant but every time you question the character you also admire Irrfan’s talent.The script was created in the late 1990s with the intention of casting Balraj Sahni in the starring role. 

Umber Singh is a Sikh who is forced to flee his homeland after losing everything following India’s partition in 1947. He is obsessed with having a male heir. When his fourth daughter is born he vows to go up against fate.

Qarib Qarib Singlle

Irrfan Khan and Parvathy Thiruvothu star in this film as Yogi and Jaya who meet on an internet dating site. Jaya a widow comes to trust and love Yogi and you do as well thanks to Irrfan Khan’s charisma. Qarib Qarib Singlle is based on a narrative written many years ago as a radio play by Tanuja Chandra’s mother Kamna Chandra. 

Tanuja Chandra’s next project a romantic comedy about an odd couple falling in love on a road trip was set to star Irrfan Khan as the lead actor in August 2016. Luke Kenny appears in the final 15 minutes of the film as Parvathy’s ex-boyfriend Sidkong Sharma who is now a rich businessman. The scene was originally considerably longer and it verifies and deepens Parvathy’s character but it had to be cut due to time constraints. Deepak Dobriyal was recommended by Irrfan for a role in the film. However Deepak declined the film.

Life Of Pi

Ang Lee’s Life of Pi is a film that requires no introduction. While the plot centers around Pi Patel played by Suraj Sharma Irrfan Khan and Tabu play Pi’s parents. Irrfan Khan steals the show in what is classified as a supporting role. . It was the eighth highest-grossing film in the UK and Ireland in 2012 the third highest-grossing 3D film the highest-grossing adventure film and the highest-grossing PG-rated film.

Suraj Sharma simply attended the audition to support his brother. He didn’t want to go at first because it would be meant to wait for hours. His brother bribed him into accompanying him by promising to buy Suraj a Subway sandwich afterward. Suraj eventually consented and was cast after his brother’s manager suggested it.

Irrfan Khan’s Controversies

Qurbani Controversy

In an interview the actor stated that instead of fasting people should reflect on themselves. He also stated that animals are slain in the name of Qurbani. Irrfan elaborated saying that qurbaani means to sacrifice something near to you rather than a sheep or goat. The ‘Piku’ actor went on to say that nowadays the significance of religious rituals has faded and people participate in them without understanding the true message.

In a statement about Muharram the actor stated that Muslims have made a mockery of the holiday and that while it is meant for sorrow it is celebrated as a party. Irrfan also chastised Muslim leaders for failing to speak out against terrorism and urged the public to challenge lawmakers on the subject.

His remarks were met with a reaction by All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) member Zafaryab Gilabi who reprimanded the actor claiming that he is not a religious leader and that his counsel is unnecessary. Maulana Khatri secretary of Jamaat-e-Ulema-e-Hind also responded to the actor’s remark stating that Irrfan Khan should focus on his career rather than making random statements.

Irrfan Khan’s Networth

Mr. Irrfan’s entire net worth is believed to be 50 million USD which is roughly equivalent to 360 crore Indian rupees in Indian currency (i.e approx Three Hundred and Sixty Crore INR). The majority of his income comes from films and commercial sponsorships. Irrfan Khan used to receive a profit share from his films in addition to his acting fees. 

He used to charge a lot of money for brand endorsements. With such a large profit and earnings Irrfan was always at the top of the list when it came to giving charity and social service. Mr. Khan was also at the top of the list for paying Income Tax as he was one of the largest taxpayers in the country.

Irrfan Khan owns a home in Mumbai an apartment in Juhu and several real estate properties throughout the country. Irrfan was a keen fan of high-end cars. His car collection includes a Toyota Celica a BMW a Maserati Quattroporte and an Audi.

Irrfan Khan Death

Khan stated on Twitter in March 2018 that he has been diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer. He sought therapy in the United Kingdom for a year before returning to India in February 2019.

On 28 April 2020 he was admitted to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital for treatment of a colon infection and died a day later at the age of 53. His mother Saeeda Begum had died only four days before in Jaipur.

Following the news of his passing celebrities and literary luminaries from all over the world offered their respects online. Khan was laid to rest at the Versova Kabristan in Mumbai with his sons performing the death rites.
