Irrfan Khan was an Indian actor who primarily appeared in Hindi cinema but also in British and Hollywood films. Khan has won several honours including a National Film Award and two Filmfare Awards. With his diverse and genuine performance Irrfan established himself as one of the finest performers in Indian cinema over a nearly thirty-year career. He received the Padma Shri India’s fourth highest civilian honour in 2011.

Khan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018. He went to London for treatment. He died on April 29 2020 at the age of 54 from a colon infection.

Qurbani Controversy

In an interview the actor stated that instead of fasting people should reflect on themselves. He also stated that animals are slain in the name of Qurbani. Irrfan elaborated saying that qurbaani means to sacrifice something near to you rather than a sheep or goat. The ‘Piku’ actor went on to say that nowadays the significance of religious rituals has faded and people participate in them without understanding the true message.

In a statement about Muharram the actor stated that Muslims have made a mockery of the holiday and that while it is meant for sorrow it is celebrated as a party. Irrfan also chastised Muslim leaders for failing to speak out against terrorism and urged the public to challenge lawmakers on the subject.

His remarks were met with a reaction by All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) member Zafaryab Gilabi who reprimanded the actor claiming that he is not a religious leader and that his counsel is unnecessary. Maulana Khatri secretary of Jamaat-e-Ulema-e-Hind also responded to the actor’s remark stating that Irrfan Khan should focus on his career rather than making random statements.

Mr. Irrfan’s entire net worth is believed to be 50 million USD which is roughly equivalent to 360 crore Indian rupees in Indian currency (i.e approx Three Hundred and Sixty Crore INR).
