A few years ago I wrote an article about how to take sharp landscape photos because sometimes, getting the sharpest results can be a little harder than we think. Viewing the image on a larger display (like a computer) we can realize that the photo is not as sharp as we thought when we were looking at the camera’s LCD screen in the field. Here are some tips to avoid blurry images…
1. Use a tripod
When taking landscape photos, using a tripod is highly recommended. Even if you can hold the camera very steady, you may end up with a blurry image in low light or when using a small aperture. You can increase the ISO to compensate and use a higher shutter speed, but this will result in a noisy image with a loss of detail. Using a tripod is almost a must in low light, such as at dawn or sunset.
2. Turn off VR/IS
When using a tripod it’s best to turn off VR/IS (Vibration Reduction/Image Stabilizer) as it has its own vibrations. It can be really helpful when shooting by hand, but in this case it’s completely useless and will result in blurry images.
3. Use the remote control or Selfie
Pressing the shutter button will cause the camera to shake slightly, so using a remote control is recommended. If you don’t have a remote control, using the Selfie on your camera is a perfect solution.
4. Choose the right aperture
As for zoom lenses, you won’t get as sharp an image at the edges of the aperture range as you will in the middle. For example, if your lens has an aperture range between f/4 and f/22, a photo taken at f/8 or f/11 will be noticeably sharper than one taken at f/4, f/16, or f/22.
5. Lock the mirror
With DSLRs, when the mirror is locked, the camera shakes a little. Using this feature you can avoid this and take very sharp photos. This is very important and now it is always the standard setting when I shoot landscapes with a tripod and remote control. On my Nikon cameras it is called “Exposure Delay Mode”.
