Hamid made his first-class debut for Lancashire in August 2015, against Glamorgan. He was replaced by Paul Houghton, who took over at first bat alongside Carl Brown. In the first innings, he scored 28 runs. He played three more first-class games that season, averaging 42 and scoring a high of 91.
Prior to the start of the 2016 season, Hamid signed a four-year contract with Lancashire in February 2016. As the youngest Lancashire player to sign the contract, he scored over 1,000 points that season, breaking Mike Atherton's record.

On 12 November 2016, on the fourth day of the first Test match, Hamid scored his first half-century, becoming the third youngest England batsman to score 50. In his first match, he scored 31 and was bowled out for 82. In the second Test match, he scored 13 in the first innings for England and 25 in the second. In the first innings of the third Test match, he was bowled out for 9, as England won 283-283.
He was out in the first innings with a broken finger, but still managed to hit an unbeaten half-century in the second innings, batting below his regular opening position at No. 8. It was later revealed that he would forfeit the remainder of the tour in order to return home for surgery on his finger.
Hamid was selected in the Ashes squad for 2021-2022. Hamid scored 25 runs in the first innings of the first Test match at the Gabba and 27 runs in the second innings. In the first four Test matches, his scores were below par and he was benched in the fifth Test match.
