Frederick Robert Williamson, also known as Hammer, was born on March 5, 1938, in Gary, Indiana, United States. He attended Northwestern University, where he played collegiate football. Eventually, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent. In 1960, he played for the Steelers for a year. Later, he started playing for the American Football League. He spent the next four seasons with the Oakland Raiders, where he became part of the AFL All-Star team in 1963, 1962, and 1961. He then spent four more seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.
After retiring from football, Williamson began his acting career. Since 1970, he has appeared in numerous films and TV shows, including Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon, M*A*S*H, The Legend of Nigger Charlie, The Legend of Nigger Charlie, Black Caesar, Three the Hard Way, One Down, Two to Go, Take a Hard Ride, and Original Gangstas.
