What is Diwali? Why is it important?

What is Diwali and the importance of Diwali.

Diwali is one of the biggest festivals in India, but the way it is celebrated is not limited to India. Diwali is also widely celebrated across the globe. The description of Diwali is basically that every family enjoys celebrating it in different ways. Diwali is a festival when all family members come together to celebrate the festival of lights. Diwali, also known as Jain Diwali, Bandi, Jhor Diwas, Tihar Swati Sohrai and Bandina, is a major festival celebrated by the Hindu Jains and Sikhs. It is a festival of lights. The festival usually lasts for five days and is celebrated from mid-October to mid-November in the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Kartika. Diwali is one of the most famous Hindu festivals and represents the metaphysical “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance”.

Many other regional customs associate the festival with Sita, Rama, Vishnu, Krishna, Durga, Shiva, Kali, Hanuman, Kubera, Yama, Yami, Dhanvantari or Vishnukarman, besides Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and Ganesha, the god of wisdom and remover of obstacles. In addition, the festival commemorates the return home of Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, and the defeat of the demon Ravana in Lanka.
