Ramya made her debut in the Kannada film Abhi in 2003. She has won the Udaya Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performances in Kannada films such as Tananam Tananam (2006) and Amrithadhare (2005), although she has occasionally appeared in Tamil and Telugu films.
In 2011, she won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actress for her role as the eponymous heroine in the romantic drama Sanju Weds Geetha. Her other films include the 2016 epic fantasy film Nagarahavu and the 2011 blockbuster fantasy film Katari Veera Surasundarangi.
