In 2003, Mehndi and six others were accused of defrauding people of huge sums of money by falsely promising to take them to the United States.[60] In March 2018, a Patiala court sentenced Mehndi to two years in prison in a human trafficking case. The singer and his brother Shamsher were accused of illegally sending people abroad as part of their dance troupe. Daler was arrested after a case was registered and was granted bail a few days later. Mehndi said he would appeal to a higher court. The Patiala court rejected his appeal in 2022 and upheld the sentence of two years in prison.
