Leon Schuster faces another back surgery
“I'm a bit depressed; this has gone on for so long. I've been through a rough patch, it's been hell.”
“You don't feel well when you're not well, and that says a lot about the relationship between the mind and the body; that they affect each other. Our emotions trigger a hormonal chemistry in the body; they're not separate.
“In severe cases, you can no longer do things the way you used to, you lose control over your body; all of these things can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety because they have such a huge impact on your body and mind.”
“We recommend having family around because being sick is not easy, and it is even harder when you feel alone. Having the support of friends and family can at least lighten the burden, although it does not take away the pain.
“Supportive psychotherapy is what we often do in these cases; we support the individual through their grief. Often, we may not understand the level of pain they are feeling. It's not about telling them they'll be okay; it's about listening, being present, and finding out what they need.”
