Lahiri came to Bombay at the age of 19. He got his first opportunity to act in the Bengali film Daadu (1974), in which Lata Mangeshkar sang a song he composed. The first Hindi film for which he composed music was Nanha Shikari (1973), and his first Hindi song was Tu Hi Mera Chanda, sung by Mukesh. The turning point in his career was Tahir Hussain’s Hindi film Zakhmee (1975), for which he composed music and also served as a dubbing singer. He composed a duet with Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi for the same film, called Nothing Is Impossible. His Jalta Hai Jiya Mera (Kishore Asha Duet) for the same film and Lata Mangeshkar’s solos such as Abhi Abhi Thi Dushmani and Aao Tumhe Chand were popular and brought him recognition. Kishore Lata became famous for his duet Phir Janam Lenge Hum from the film Phir Janam Lenge Hum. All the songs from the film Chalte Chalte (1976) became a hit, earning him recognition as a national music director. He sang a song with Sulakshana Pandit called Jana Kahan Hai, which earned him recognition as a singer. He also composed the melodious songs that Kishore Kumar sang with Asha Bhosle or Lata Mangeshkar in the 80s films starring Rajesh Khanna, including hits like Naya Kadam, Masterji, Aaj Ka MLA Ram Avtar, Bewafai, Maqsad, Suraag, Insaaf Main and Karonga and Adika. After the success of the film Himmatwala, Bappi regularly composed duets for Jeetendra-starrer films like Justice Chowdhry, Jaani Dost, Mawali, Haisiyat, Tohfa, Balidaan, Qaidi, Hoshiyaar, Sinhasan, Suhaagan, Majaal, Tamasha, Sone Pe Suhaga Bappi Lahiri created a record by composing music for 12 super hit silver jubilee films starring Jetendra between 1983 and 1985. In 1986, he was included in the Guinness Book of World Records for having recorded more than 180 songs for 33 films.

• Bappi Lahiri’s name has a certain musical rhythm to it, but it is not his official name. His birth name was Alokesh Lahiri, but he later adopted Bappi as his name.
• Bappi Lahiri has achieved great success as a musician, but he seems to have the blessing of his uncle Kishore Kumar.
