Lahiri came to Bombay at the age of 19. He got his first opportunity to act in the Bengali film Daadu (1974), in which Lata Mangeshkar sang a song composed by him. The first Hindi film for which he composed music was Nanha Shikari (1973), and his first Hindi song was Tu Hi Mera Chanda, sung by Mukesh. The turning point in his career was Tahir Hussain’s Hindi film Zakhmee (1975), for which he composed music and also served as a dubbing singer. He composed a duet Nothing Is Impossible with Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi for the same film. His Jalta Hai Jiya Mera (Kishore Asha Duet) for the same film and Lata Mangeshkar’s solos such as Abhi Abhi Thi Dushmani and Aao Tumhe Chand became popular and earned him recognition. Kishore Rata became famous for his duet Phir Janam Lenge Hum from the film Phir Janam Lengey Hum. All the songs from the film Chalte Chalte (1976) became hits, which brought him national recognition as a music director. He sang a duet with Sulakshana Pandit in Jana Kahan Hai, which brought him recognition as a singer. Songs from films like Aap Ki Khatir, Dil Se Mile Dil, Patita, Lahu Ke Do Rang, Hatya and Ravikant Nagaichs Surakksha 1979 were light music. He also composed some beautiful songs, sung by Kishore Kumar, with Asha Bhosle or Lata Mangeshkar, which were featured in hit films of the 80s starring Rajesh Khanna like Naya Kadam, Masterji, Aaj Ka MLA Ram Avtar, Bewafai, Maqsad, Suraag, Insaaf Main Karoonga and Adhikar. After the success of Himmatwala, Bappi regularly composed duets with Kishore Kumar for Jeetendra-starrer films like Justice Chowdhry, Jaani Dost, Mawali, Haisiyat, Tohfa, Balidaan, Qaidi, Hoshiyaar, Sinhasan, Suhaagan, Majaal, Tamasha, Sone Pe Suhaga and Dharm Adhikari. Bappi Lahiri created a record by composing songs for 12 super hit silver jubilee films starring Jetendra between 1983 and 1985. In 1986, he entered the Guinness Book of World Records for having recorded over 180 songs in 33 films.

• Bappi Lahiri’s name has a certain musical rhythm to it, but it is not his official name. His birth name was Alokesh Lahiri, but he later adopted Bappi as his name.
• Bappi Lahiri has achieved great success as a musician, but he seems to have the blessing of his uncle Kishore Kumar.
