Arijit Singh is a famous Indian playback singer and music composer. Although he has performed in many other Indian languages he primarily sings in Bengali and Hindi which are his native tongues. 

Prior to the 2013 releases of Tum Hi Ho and Chahun Main Ya Naa Arijit Singh had just begun his career when he took part in the modern reality programme Fame Gurukul in 2005. According to Spotify he was the most streamed Indian musician in 2020 and 2021. On Spotify he has the highest number of Asian solo fans.

Arijit Singh is a badminton player writer movie buff and documentary producer in addition to being a vocalist. Arijit Singh attended Raja Bijay Singh High School before continuing his education at the University of Kalyani’s affiliated Sripat Singh College. He claimed that despite being a good student his parents decided to put him through professional training because he cared more about music. 

Arijit began training with the Hazari brothers when he was three years old and at the age of nine he was awarded a government scholarship to pursue vocal studies in Indian classical music. Rajendra Prasad Hazari taught him Indian classical music and Dhirendra Prasad Hazari gave him tabla instruction. He learned pop music and Rabindra Sangeet from Birendra Prasad Hazari.

Marriage

First Wife- Ruprekha Banerjee

Rumours claim that in 2013 when Arijit Singh was employed as a music programmer he wed Ruprekha Banerjee a competitor on his first reality series Fame Gurukul. However Arijit Singh and Ruprekha Banerjee’s initial union didn’t last long and they quickly divorced. According to a number of accounts he chose to get married for the first time on impulse and quickly.

Second Wife-Koel Roy

Following a contentious divorce Arijit Singh began dating his current spouse Koel Roy a childhood friend. Arijit Singh and Koel Roy got married on 20 January 2014. Following Bengali wedding customs the pair exchanged vows in West Bengal’s Tarapeeth Temple. They have been blissfully married ever since.

Early Career

When Arijit Singh was 18 years old his mentor Rajendra Prasad Hazari suggested that he leave his hometown and take part in the reality show Fame Gurukul (2005). This was the beginning of Arijit Singh’s musical career. He placed sixth and was removed by audience vote. Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali saw his skill during the performance and had him sing Yun Shabnam a song slated to be utilised in his upcoming movie Saawariya. The song was no longer necessary due to a change in the script during production. It was never made public. The head of Tips Kumar Taurani signed him after Fame Gurukul for an album that was never made public.

Arijit Singh competed in and won the reality competition 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil. He made the decision to relocate to Mumbai in 2006 to work as a freelancer residing in a rented room in the city’s Lokhandwala district. He built his music studio with the prize money from 10 ke 10 Le Gaye Dil which was 10 Lakh. He became a music producer and started writing songs and singing for radio and television commercials.

Early in his musical career Arijit Singh worked as a music producer and music programmer for artists such Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy Vishal-Shekhar Mithoon Monty Sharma and Pritam. He oversaw the chorus and vocal passages while collaborating with other composers but it was with Pritam that he started to independently write and programme music.

The Rising Phase: 2010-2014

2010 saw the beginning of Singh’s collaboration with Pritam on three movies: Golmaal 3 Crook and Action Replayy. Sandeep Chowta’s song Neeve Na Neeve Na from the 2010 Telugu film Kedi marked his debut as a singer in the industry. With the Mithoon composition Phir Mohabbat from the 2011 film Murder 2 Singh made his Bollywood musical debut. Pritam invited him to sing as well during the same year when he was programming for the song Raabta which stars Saif Ali Khan in the lead from Agent Vinod (2012). All four renditions of the song included his portion and one of them required him to sing the full song. Singh was dubbed for Pritam in Players Cocktail and Barfi! in addition to Agent Vinod.

Arijit Singh also performed the song Uska Hi Banana for Chirantan Bhatt in the movie 1920: Evil Returns. In the movie Shanghai he performed the song Duaa by Vishal-Shekhar. The Mirchi Music Award for Upcoming Male Playback Singer was given to him as a result. He received a nomination in the same category for BarfiPhir !’s Le Aya Dil. Arijit Singh’s big break came in the movie Aashiqui 2 where he was a lead and key vocalist and gained notoriety with the release of the song Tum Hi Ho. In the Vishal-Shekhar penned song Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari from Chennai Express Arijit Singh sung for Shah Rukh Khan. The year saw his collaboration with Sharib-Toshi on the song Kabhi Jo Baadal Barse from Jackpot and with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the semi-classical number Laal Ishq from Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela in addition to performing the duet version of Har Kisi Ko from Boss with Neeti Mohan.

In 2014 Arijit Singh sang two songs from Main Tera Hero the song Raat Bhar from Heropanti for Sajid-Wajid and the Hindi version of Medhuvaagathaan from Kochadaiiyaan which was dubbed by A. R. Singh recorded two songs from Haider with Vishal Bhardwaj and Jaise Mera Tu from Happy Ending with Sachin-Jigar. He worked with numerous other music directors like Tony Kakkar and Palak Muchhal throughout that year. He sang for Mithoon on Humdard for Ek Villain which stars Sharddha Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra and Hai Dil Ye Mera for Hate Story 2 during 2014. On Manwa Laage for Happy New Year and Sajde for Kill Dil he collaborated with Vishal-Shekhar. He contributed vocals to three tracks on Pritam Chakraborty’s Holiday which Arijit Singh himself produced and two songs on Sharib-Toshi’s Zid.  While he received two Filmfare nominations for Suno Na Sangemarmar and Mast Magan he received the maximum nominations for the year for his song Muskurane by Jeet Ganguli. With the song Neeye Vaazhkai Enbena from the film Pugazh Singh made his Tamil debut in 2015. Additionally he contributed vocals to the dance song Sooraj Dooba Hain from the film Roy which stars Jaqueline Fernandez Arjun Rampal and Rnabir Kapoor which was written by Kumaar and composed by Amaal Mallik. He sang the duet Agar Tum Saath Ho from the Tamasha movie penned by Irshad Kamil and arranged by A. R. Rahman with Alka Yagnik throughout the year. On the Khwaishein song from Calendar Girls he once more collaborated with Amaal Mallik. Along with Shreya Ghoshal Singh also dubbed the Hindi version of the song Pookkalae Sattru Oyivedungal from Rahman’s I. Singh also collaborated with Gannguli and Bobby-Imran for the film Khamoshiyan where he sang the title song. He sung Tu Har Lamha for Bobby-Imran and Baatein Ye Kabhi Na for Gannguli. On two more productions Teri Khushboo for Mr. X and the title track for Hamari Adhuri Kahani he worked with Gannguli.

 Along with Sachin-Jigar and Chirantan Bhatt on Chunar and Teri Meri Kahaani he also collaborated with other fresh new composers including Bann Chakraborty Khamosh Shah Jatinder Shah and Manj Musik. Singh also created a repeat of Deewana Tera a song by Sonu Nigam from 1999 for Ek Paheli Leela. Singh and Himesh Reshammiya worked together for the first time in 2015 on the song Baaton Ko Teri from the film All Is Well. He performed Phantom’s Saware and Sooiyan from Guddu Rangeela and he voiced Bhardwaj in Shaam Ke Saaye and Kya Pataa for Talvar and Drishyam respectively. Singh released his second promotional single during the year in addition to creating soundtracks. Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon are featured in the song Chal Waha Jaate Hain which was written by Mallik. With the song Yaar Illahi – Qawwali from the movie Katyar Kaljat Ghusali Singh also made his Marathi debut.

The Recognition Phase: 2015-2019

On the 2015 movie Dilwale’s soundtrack Arijit sang Janam Janam which stars Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan as the lead vocalist. He and Antara Mitra performed the duet song Gerua which was written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and was composed by Pritam. He performed the well-liked dance number Tukur Tukur from the film Dilwale which was also composed by Pritam and penned by Bhattacharya. In 2015 Arijit finished filming his first film as a filmmaker. It is a Bengali feature film with the title Bhalobasar Rojnamcha that is made up of seven short films.

Early in 2016 Singh sang the Swanand Kirkire and Amit Trivedi song Yeh Fitoor Mera. With the song Satrangi Re from the movie Wrong Side Raju Singh made his Gujarati debut. Some of his notable Hindi songs from 2016 included Soch Na Sake a duet with Tulsi Kumar from the film Airlift;  Sanam Re the title track from the film Sanam Re; Bolna from the film Kapoor and Sons; and Itni Si Baat Hain a duet with Antara Mitra that was composed by Pritam.

Arijit Singh performed the song Lo Maan Liya which was written by Kausar Munir and composed by Jeet Ganguly as the album’s lead vocalist. He also performed the eerie songs Yaad Hain Na and Raaz Aakhein Teri from the same movie. He sang the duet Dharkhaast from the movie Shivaay with Sunidhi Chauhan. Mithoon provided the music and Sayeed Quadri wrote the words.The popular title track Ae Dil Hai Mushkil written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and composed by Pritam Chakraborty was sung by Singh as the film’s main vocalist. Additionally he sang Channa Mereya which has over 110 million views on YouTube. He performed another number-one song from Befikre Nashe Si Chadh Gayi. He also performed Naina from the 2016 film Dangal.

In 2017 Arijit Singh sang a love duet called Zaalima from the film Raees which was written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and arranged by Pritam’s JAM8 for Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma. He contributed vocals to the Salim-Sulaiman songs Babul Mora and Kuch Parbat Hilayein penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya and taken from the uplifting film Poorna. He created Alvida from the Rangoon movie. Additionally he performed the chorus song Namami Brahmaputra by Papon and the song Roke Na Ruke Naina from the movie Badrinath Ki Dulhania in Which Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt played the lead roles.. He performed the songs Murshida from the Begum Jaan written by Rahat Indori and composed by Anu Malik and Haareya from the Hindi film Meri Pyaari Bindu.

From the Half Girlfriend soundtrack Arijit Singh performed the song Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga which was written by Mithoon and had lyrics by Manoj Muntashir. He also performed Pal Bhar an extended and reprised version of Phir Bhi Tumko Chahunga. He performed Ik Vaari Aa a song with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya and music by Pritam as the lead vocalist in the movie Raabta. The song is from the Indian movie Raabta’s soundtrack. For the song Lambiyaan si Judaiyaan which is featured on the soundtrack for the movie and was written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and JAM8 Singh provided vocal assistance and performed acoustic guitar alongside Roland Fernandes. In the film Behen Hogi Teri he performed the song Tera Hoke Rahoon which was written by JAM8 and had lyrics by Bipin Das.

Arijit Singh performed the dance song Main Tera Boyfriend with Neha Kakkar and the song O Saathi both from the Hindi film Shab whose music and lyrics were penned by Mithoon. Singh performed the songs Ullu ka Pattha Galti Se Mistake Jhumri Talaiyya and Phir Wahi which were written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and composed by Pritam as the lead vocalist for the Jagga Jasoos Soundtrack. He has sung for Shah Rukh Khan and sang Hawayein written by Irshad Kamil and composed by Pritam Chakraborty as well as the dance song Beech Beech Main from the movie Jab Harry Met Sejal with additional vocals from Shefali Alvares and Shalmali Kholgade.

For the movie Bareilly Ki Barfi Arijit Singh sung the song Bairagi. For Aksar 2 he additionally sang Jaana Ve and Aaj Zid. He also performed the song Main Hoon Saath Tere from Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana and appeared in the music video for the song Pal which is from the movie Monsoon Shootout.

In 2018 Singh performed Aaj Se Teri for the Kausar Munir and Amit Trivedi-penned film Pad Man. He performed Binte Dil which stars Ranveer Singh Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor and A. M. Turaz and Sanjay Leela Bhansali-composed movie Padmaavat. He also performed the chart-topping songs Tera Yaar Hoon Main and Subah Subah for the Prakriti Kakar and Amaal Mallik directed Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Additionally he provided the soundtracks for the movies Dil Juunglee 3 Storeys Hichki Raazi Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran Veere Di Wedding 102 Not Out Baazaar Kedarnath and Karwaan.

In 2019 Arijit Singh performed two songs: Mere Pyare Prime Minister from Mere Pyare Prime Minister with music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and lyrics by Gulzar and Ruan Ruan from the movie Sonchiriya. His song Ve Maahi featuring Asees Kaur from the movie Kesari which was composed by Tanishk Bagchi was released in March. Then came First Class featuring Neeti Mohan and Kalank the film’s title song which was written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and composed by Pritam Chakraborty. He performed the song Khairiyat from the Chhichhore film which was penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya and composed by Pritam. His song Ghungroo from the movie War which featured Shilpa Rao was released in October. He performed Dariyaganj alongside Dhvani Bhanushali in the movie Jai Mummy Di toward the end of December 2019.

Arijit Singh- Man of the Show: 2020-2022

Ten of Arijit Singh’s tracks were released in January 2020. Pritam’s compositions for Shayad Haan Tum Ho and Haan Main Galat three songs from the movie Love Aaj Kal have been released; He has performed the songs Azaadi Ke Liye and Mere Watan from the Amazon Originals The Forgotten Army. He also sang the songs Dua Karo from the movie Street Dancer 3D and Chal Ghar Chalen from the movie Malang. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composed the title track of Chhapaak along with Khulne Do and Sab Jhulas Gaya Additionally he contributed vocals to the Bengali movie Love Aaj Kal Porshu.

Arijit Singh revealed his forthcoming endeavour to create non-film music on July 18 2020 under the name Oriyon Music. On July 31 2020 he appeared in the music video for Sunny M.R.’s new song Lifafe. Singh’s song Dil Ko Maine Di Kasam which was written by Amaal Malik was released in August 2020. On October 4 2020 Singh released his debut single Rihaa through his label Oriyon Music. On October 10 2020 Singh released the Bengali version Mukto Kore Dao .. Additionally Arijit Singh performed the Ludo songs Aabaad Barbaad and Humdum Hurdum . Anurag Basu is the film’s director and Pritam is its composer.

Arijit Singh and Raj Pandit performed O Saaiyan  from the movie The Power during the beginning of January 2021. Singh announced on March 12 2020 that he will be writing the music for the Bollywood film Pagglait through his label Oriyon Music marking his debut in the industry. On March 15 2021 the soundtrack album was made available on a number of music streaming providers. 83 Tadap Sooryavanshi Bhuj: The Pride of India and other movies were among the others for which he sang.

Arijit Singh and Salman Khan Controversy

In 2014 when Arijit Singh was the guest at an award event hosted by Salman Khan Arijit was asked jokingly So Gaye the kya to which he responded kya karein aapne Sula diya. This exchange was not well received. Later a few Salman movies apparently omitted Arijit’s songs. While there were no overt accusations regarding who was responsible for the removal of his songs from Bharat and Sultan a helpless Arijit apologized on Facebook which only served to fuel the flames. The letter of apology stated that Arijit had constantly tried to apologize to Salman and urged him not to remove his song from his movie Sultan. He expressed regret for his actions.
