Mitra’s father was a music teacher and she grew up surrounded by music. Mitra started singing when she was three years old, when other children came to her house to learn from her father. Mitra started performing on stage as a singer when she was six years old. She loved listening to her aunt sing. Her aunt used to sing for All India Radio. As a child, she also sang Bengali folk songs. Later, she showed a keen interest in music and her father encouraged her. At the age of 18, she was accepted as a contestant in the national television show and performed well as a finalist in both the show and the subsequent similar show “Junoon”. She once considered becoming a doctor, but later decided against it and chose to become a professional singer.
Mitra participated in the second season of Indian Idol. Despite making it to the top five, she was eliminated. After Mitra was eliminated from the competition, renowned music director Anu Malik offered her a voiceover singing job, but she returned to her hometown and soon after (April 2006) moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in singing film soundtracks.
Later, she participated in another famous Indian television reality show, Junoon, Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka, as a member of the Bollywood singer team. Despite failing in both competitions, she still considered both competitions as an opportunity for education and career growth and expressed gratitude to the judges, producers and television viewers for giving her the opportunity to perform in front of them in the competition. Currently, Antara Mitra is living a happy life as per her financial status and is married.
