On December 27 2004, Puri was taken to the Hinduja Hospital with myelodysplastic syndrome a rare kind of blood cancer. Puri underwent brain surgery to treat his illness.
He had to regularly have the blood that had built up in his cerebral part of the brain removed due to his condition and over time he eventually fell into a coma which he was in until just before his death on January 12 2005 about 7:30 a.m. His body was brought to his home so that mourners could pay their respects and his funeral was held at the Shivaji Park crematorium on January 13 2005.
