Amjad Khan, born on November 12, 1940 in Bombay, Bombay, British India, is a famous Indian actor and film director. He is the son of actor Jayant and has a successful career in the Indian film industry. In nearly two decades, he has appeared in more than 132 films, becoming a versatile actor.

Amjad Khan is widely recognized for playing villainous roles in Indian films. One of his most famous roles is Gabbar Singh in the legendary 1975 film Sholay. The character of Gabbar Singh left an indelible mark on Indian cinema with his intimidating presence and memorable lines. Another notable role is Dilawar in the film Muqaddar Ka Sikandar.

Amjad Khan started his acting career in theatre before entering the film industry. He made his debut as a child actor in the 1951 film Nazneen at the age of 11. His next film role came in Ab Dilli Dur Nahin in 1957 at the age of 17. He later made a brief appearance as an assistant to director K. Asif in the late 1960s film Love and God. Unfortunately, the film remained unfinished after Asif’s death in 1971 and was not released until 1986.

In 1973, Amjad Khan played a small role in the film Hindustani. However, his breakthrough came in 1975 when he was offered the iconic role of the gangster Gabbar Singh in the film Terror. The character and his dialogues became legendary and the film became a blockbuster. Amjad Khan’s portrayal of Gabbar Singh earned him huge popularity and his dialogues and mannerisms became an integral part of Bollywood culture. He even appeared as Gabbar Singh in a commercial for Britannia Glucose Biscuits.

After the success of Shelley, Khan continued to play villains in numerous Indian films throughout the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. He often starred opposite Amitabh Bachchan and became a huge hit, surpassing the previous Indian actor Ajit in terms of demand and popularity. Khan’s versatility was also reflected in his unconventional roles, such as the helpless monarch Wajid Ali Shah in Satyajit Ray’s Shatrangi Kashiradi (1977) and Emperor Akbar in the film Meera (1979).

Apart from acting, Amjad Khan also ventured into directing. He directed and starred in the films Cop Thief (1983) and Aamir Admi Gharib Admi (1985). While Cop Thief did not do well at the box office, Aamir Admi Gharib Admi was a huge success at the box office.

Amjad Khan, who was the president of the Actors Guild Association, was well-known in the film industry. He often intervened and mediated disputes between actors and directors/producers. A notable example was when he resolved a conflict between Meenakshi Seshadri and Raj Kumar Santoshi during the film Damini (1993), ensuring that Seshadri was reinstated after Santoshi had initially decided to remove her from the project.

PlaySholay is a 1975 Indian Hindi-language action-adventure film directed by Ramesh Sippy, produced by his father GP Sippy, and written by Salim–Javed. The film tells the story of two criminals, Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai (Amitabh Bachchan), who are hired by a retired police officer (Sanjeev Kumar) to catch a ruthless gangster, Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). Hema Malini and Jaya Bhaduri also star as Veeru and Jai’s lovers, Basanti and Radha, respectively. The music was composed by RD Burman.

The film was shot over a period of two and a half years in the rocky terrain of Ramanagara in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. The Terrorist was released with a running time of 198 minutes after the Central Board of Film Censors requested that several violent scenes be removed. In 1990, the original 204-minute director’s cut was released on home media. Upon its initial release, The Terrorist received negative reviews and a tepid commercial response, but good word-of-mouth publicity helped it become a box office success. It broke many records for consecutive runs in Indian theaters and ran for more than five years at the Minerva Theatre in Mumbai. The film also achieved overseas success in the Soviet Union. It was the highest-grossing Indian film at the time and the highest-grossing Indian film until Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994). According to numerous reports, The Terrorist remains one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time, adjusted for inflation.

Shatrani K. Kahradi

The Man Who Plays Chess, later released internationally as The Man Who Plays Chess, is a 1977 Indian film written and directed by Satyajit Ray, based on a short story of the same name by Munshi Premchand. Amjad Khan plays the role of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the Minister of Awadh, and Richard Attenborough plays General James Outram. The main cast includes actors Sanjeev Kumar and Syed Jaffrey, who play chess players. Other actors include Shabana Azmi, Farooq Sheikh, Farida Jalal, David Abraham, and Tom Ort. Amitabh Bachchan is the narrator. This is the only full-length Hindi feature film by filmmaker Satyajit Ray. He later made a Hindi short film for television called Sadgati, also based on a short story by Munshi Premchand.

In 1979, Gulzar directed the Hindi film Meera. The film is based on the life of the Indian saint poet Meera, who gave up royal luxury to follow her love for Lord Krishna. The film depicts Meera’s life and times from a historical rather than mythological perspective. Award-winning dubbing singer Vani Jairam sang the film’s soundtrack for Pt. Ravi Shankar.

Muqaddar Ka Sikandar is a 1978 Indian drama film produced and directed by Prakash Mehra and written by Kader Khan, Vijay Kaul and Laxmikant Sharma. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, with whom he has worked in five of his nine films to date. Vinod Khanna, Raakhee, Rekha, Ranjeet and Amjad Khan also play important roles, with Nirupa Roy and Kader Khan making cameos. The film tells the story of Sikandar, an orphan who grows up in the slums of Mumbai, played by Amitabh Bachchan. The 1917 Bengali novel Devdas was the inspiration for the film’s plot.

The highest-grossing Bollywood film of 1978 and the biggest Diwali hit of all time was Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. It was also the third-highest-grossing Indian film of the decade, after Sholay and Bobby. Muqaddar Ka Sikandar was also a major overseas hit for the Soviet Union.

The film competed for nine Filmfare Awards at the 26th Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, but did not win any awards. The film was remade into the Tamil film Amara Kaaviyam (1981) and the Telugu film Prema Tarangalu (1980). The film was the last collaboration between Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna. r.

The 1977 drama Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein was produced by Nariman Baria and A. Khalia under Nav Sampathi Productions and directed by Meraj.
