Yashasvi Bhupendra Kumar Jaiswal is an Indian cricketer who plays in Test and T20I matches. In July 2023, he made his debut for his country against the West Indies in the first Test match and scored a hundred in the first innings. He is a member of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Mumbai domestic cricket team. In 2019, he became the youngest cricketer to score a double century in Grade A cricket.

He was a member of the Indian team that participated in the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, which finished third and won the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games. He also led the team in runs scored at the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup and was named Player of the Tournament. He was also a reserve member of the Indian team that participated in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship and finished second.

In 2024, he attracted special attention when he scored two consecutive hundreds in two Test matches against England in a five-match Test series. He became the only other Indian batsmen to have accomplished this feat, after Virat Kohli and Vinod Kambly. Yashasvi is the third-youngest cricketer in Test history to score two double centuries, after Vinod Kambly and Sir Don Bradman. He equaled the world record held by Wasim Akram for most sixes (12) hit by a cricketer in a Test innings in the same series. In addition, he became the second Indian player, after Sunil Gavaskar, to score 700 runs in a Test series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s cricket career has inspired many. He overcame the obstacles brought on by his poor upbringing to achieve his ambitions. The Mumbai boy made headlines in August when he joined the Indian U-19 team for the tour of Sri Lanka. Yashasvi has made progress in junior cricket, hitting 49 centuries in the past five years, but his performance in the national team has not been satisfactory.

However, let’s take a look back at the beginning of his career to better understand and appreciate it.

Jaiswal first rose to fame in 2015 when he set a record in Indian school cricket with 319 runs without a loss and 13/99 in the Giles Shield. He was selected for the Mumbai Under-16 team and then for the Indian cricket team’s Under-19 side. He was named player of the tournament at the 2018 Under-19 Asia Cup, which India won with 318 runs.

In 2019, in a youth Test match, Jaiswal scored 173 runs off 220 balls against South Africa’s Under-19 team. Later that year, he played in the England Under-19 tri-series, scoring 294 runs in seven matches, including four half-centuries. In December 2019, he was named in India’s 2020 Under-19 World Cup squad. Jaiswal was the top scorer at the 2020 Under-19 World Cup and was named Player of the Tournament, including a century in the semi-final against Pakistan.

On 7 January 2019, Jaiswal made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy. On 28 September 2019, he made his first-class debut for the A-list in the 2019–20 Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Jharkhand on 16 October 2019, he scored 203 runs off 154 balls, becoming the youngest double-hundred scorer in the history of A-list cricket at the age of 17 years and 292 days. He scored 564 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 112.80, making him one of the top five scorers during the tournament. His innings had 17 fours and 12 sixes. He was selected in the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy squad for the India B team.

He was acquired by Rajasthan Royals at the 2020 Indian Premier League auction and made his Twenty20 cricket debut for the team on 22 September 2020. On 2 October 2021, he scored his first T20 half-century against Chennai Super Kings, which at the time was the second fastest score in the team’s history. On 30 April 2023, he scored his first T20 half-century against Mumbai Indians, scoring 124 runs off 62 balls, the second highest score in an IPL match at the Wankhede Stadium. In an IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders on 11 May 2023, he scored the fastest half-century in the league’s history with just 13 balls, breaking the record jointly held by Pat Cummins and KL Rahul. At the end of the 2023 Indian Premier League, he became the top scorer for Rajasthan with 625 runs.

In June 2023, Jaiswal was first called up to the Indian Test squad for the West Indies series. In the first Test match of the series, he made his debut, opened the innings with a score of 171 and scored a century. In addition, he was named the Man of the Match. In August 2023, he made his T20I debut in the third match of the T20I series against the West Indies. In the fourth match of the series, he opened the innings with Shubman Gill and scored 165, when he scored his first T20I half-century (84 off 51 balls).

He was included in the Indian squad for the 5-match home Test series against England in January 2024. In the first innings of the first Test match, he scored 80 runs off just 74 balls. He scored his first double hundred in the second match of the series, scoring 209 runs off 290 balls in the first half. He became the third youngest Indian batsman to score a double century in a Test match, after Vinod Kambli and Sunil Govaskar. Jaiswal became the third Indian batsman to score a double century in two consecutive Test matches, after Virat Kohli and Vinod Kambli, and he scored his second double century in the next match of the series. He also equaled the record for most sixes in a Test match with 12 hits in his innings.

The first player in the Test history to hit 20 sixes in a series was Jaiswal. At the age of 22, he became the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to score 500 runs in a Test series. He also set a record for the highest score by an Indian in the Test series against England.

The International Cricket Council nominated him for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for February 2024.
