Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is an Indian musician. He is known for playing the Mohan veena, a fusion instrument that is a slide guitar.

Born on 27 July 1950 in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt was surrounded by music from a young age. His father, Mohan Bhatt, was a passionate musician who taught his son various ragas and melodies in detail. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and his brother Shashi Mohan Bhatt were both disciples of the legendary sitar master Ravi Shankar.

In 1967, he came across a Spanish guitar that had been forgotten by a German student at his father’s music school. Out of curiosity, he took the guitar and modified it. After some experimentation, he was able to make it sound like an Indian classical instrument. This marked the birth of the Mohan Veena, which would become Vishwa Mohan Bhatt’s signature instrument.

His innovative approach to music has made him one of the few Indians to win a Grammy Award.

As a result, he got the opportunity to work with American slide guitarist Ry Cooder. Their joint album, A Meeting By The River, won the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 1994.
