Vinod Mehra grew up in a Punjabi family. His childhood was challenging as his father, a film distributor, passed away when Vinod was 13. Due to the family’s financial difficulties after his father’s death, Vinod was forced to drop out of school early and start working to support his family.
Vinod Mehra developed a keen interest in acting at an early age and started his acting career as a child artist in the late 1950s. He acted as a child artist in films like Raagni Lal Batti and Parineeta. He took a break from acting for a few years but re-emerged as a leading actor in the 1970s and rose to fame in Bollywood. Although Vinod Mehra struggled with personal and financial problems as a child, his career in the film industry flourished.
Vinod Mehra attended Sacred Heart Boys High School in Santacruz and later completed his undergraduate studies at St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai.
Mehra was known for his talent. He was well-read and had a deep appreciation for art and literature. Besides being fluent in Hindi, English and Punjabi, he was also proficient in several languages, which helped him a lot in his acting career.
Vinod Mehra’s mother’s name is Kamala Mehra and his father’s name is Parameshwaridas Mehra. After independence, the family shifted its headquarters from Amritsar to Mumbai as Parameshwaridas had business interests in Mumbai. He also has a younger sister named Sharda Mehra. Before Mehra started his career in the 1970s, his elder sister Sharda had made several appearances in films.
Vinod Mehra was married three times in his life. His personal life was a mess, while his professional life was steadily progressing. In 1971, Vinod’s mother arranged his marriage to Canadian actress and model Mina Brocka, but he was unable to fall in love with her. Soon after the marriage, he suffered a heart attack, so the marriage – which soon ended in divorce – was reportedly never consummated.
Soon after, he fell in love with Bindita Goswami, who was also his co-star in many films, including Dunyadari and Dada. His love was reciprocated by Bindita, and the two had a turbulent relationship. It is said that he left Meena and eloped with the actress while their marriage was still in progress. As his wife was forced to file for divorce, Vinod and Bindita got engaged. But then Mehra found out that Bindita had been dating director JP Dutta, and their relationship quickly fell apart and ended after just four years. The actress filed for divorce from Mehra and gave up her acting career to become Dutta’s wife.
In 1988, Vinod fell in love again with Kiran, the daughter of a Kenyan businessman. The ideal match for him seemed to be this young girl who had no connection with the film industry but adored Vinod. After their marriage in 1988, Kiran moved from Kenya to India to spend the rest of her life with Vinod. They also had a daughter, Sonia Mehra, and a few months later, Kiran became pregnant with a boy.
But their happiness did not last long as Vinod Mehra died of a massive heart attack on October 30, 1990. Kiran, 45, was still pregnant with Rohan, who was born six months after his father’s death.
In 1958, young actor Mehra made his debut in the film Raagini, playing a younger version of Kishore Kumar. After a few young supporting roles, he starred in the 1971 blockbuster Ek Thi Reeta, an adaptation of the British play A Girl Named Rita, alongside Tanuja. He made it to the finals of the 1965 All India Talent Contest, organized by the Associated Producers and Filmgoers, among more than 10,000 competitors. He finished second in the men’s competition after Rajesh Khanna won the contest. Before finishing second in the contest, he was an executive at Goldfield Mercantile Company.
In the late 1980s, the film Gurudev, starring Sridevi Rishi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor, marked his transition from actor to producer and director. He died of a heart attack in October 1990 at the age of 45, before he finished the film. Director Raj Sippy completed the film and it was released in 1993. Some of his delayed films, including Patthar Ke Phool (1991), Insaniyat (1994) and Aurat Aurat Aurat (1996), were released after his death.
Nagin is a 1976 Indian Hindi horror film directed by Rajkumar Kohli and produced by Harish Shah. Sunil Dutt, Reena Roy, Jeetendra, Feroz Khan, Sanjay Khan, Vinod Mehra and Rekha are among the star cast of the film. The protagonist of Nagin is a snake with shape-shifting powers who takes revenge on the man who killed her partner. In the film, Reena Roy plays the protagonist of Nagin and Jeetendra plays her boyfriend.
Jhanni Dushman is a 1979 Indian Hindi horror film produced and directed by Rajkumar Kohli and produced by Shankar Movies. The story of Jhanni Dushman revolves around a group of friends who were all killed in their past lives by an evil shapeshifting witch named Sanjana, played by Reena Roy. In this life, they must unite to defeat her and break the curse that has plagued them for centuries.
