Sanjay was married to famous film star Nandita Mathani and later married Karisma Kapoor before finally getting divorced. Although there is no evidence to prove this, a report by Bhaskar claims that the two initially met while studying in London and grew closer over time. They wanted to take their friendship to the next level, so they got married. However, their love was short-lived and they broke up due to differences without any negative repercussions.
Nandita's divorce was finalized almost at the same time as Karisma Kapoor's divorce from Sanjay Kapoor. Nandita, a renowned fashion designer who has dressed celebrities like Elizabeth Hurley and Virat Kohli, had her own boutique in Mumbai, which Karisma had frequented since the two began dating. The two ladies got along very well and were soon seen in the same circles. Nandita remained a close friend of Karisma and maintained a calm and dignified silence during the slanderous calumnies that were leveled against her during Karisma's divorce proceedings.
In 2003, Karisma married Delhi businessman Sanjay Kapoor. Theirs was an arranged marriage and problems soon arose. Ten years later, Karisma Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor chose to end their marriage, which ended in a bitter divorce battle. Karisma and Sanjay were granted divorce in 2016 after making multiple allegations against each other.
Sanjay and Karisma hurled insults at each other during the divorce process and revealed shocking details of their marriage. Sanjay was accused of being violent towards Karisma in his divorce filing. After the divorce, Karisma Kapoor was given custody of their children Samaira Kapoor and Kian Raj Kapoor, while Sanjay was allowed occasional visits.
Sanjay met Priya in New York five years ago and the two hit it off instantly. Their friendship deepened as they genuinely supported each other during the turbulent times of divorce. After dating for five years and divorcing their respective partners (Karisma Kapoor and Vikram Chatwal), the two decided to get married.
The wedding was a private affair attended only by close family and friends. The wedding took place in the couple's hometown of Delhi. Both Priya and Sanjay opted for a recognized court marriage and wore traditional attire. Sanjay looked stunning in a white kurta-pajama, while Priya looked stunning in an orange bridal salwar suit with minimal makeup.

Karisma claimed that Sanjay and his mother Rani were also accused of dowry harassment. She also claimed that Sanjay led a playboy lifestyle, including living with another woman. She recalled that Sanjay's mother also supported all his illegal activities and said that after they got married, Sanjay still had a physical relationship with his first wife.
Karisma and Sanjay fought in court for custody of their children, which forced them to publicly expose their scandals in order to declare the other unfit.
